BOOK REVIEW- CALICO SPY

Pinkerton operative Katie Madison’s newest case takes her to Calico, Kansas, where two Harvey House restaurant waitresses were murdered in mysterious circumstances. Calico’s sheriff, Branch Whitman, has never met a Pink he liked and is stunned to learn the pretty redhead’s true identity as she works undercover as a Harvey girl. A tornado hits town, and a past deception puts Branch’s eight-year-old-son in danger. Now the Sheriff has no choice but to work with Katie—or chance losing everything he holds dear.  AMAZON  I gave it 3 Stars

A slow start to the story. It took time to introduce the town, the MC's, the cast of the other characters and especially the Harvey Girls.   That restaurant business was run in a pretty rigid way, at least for those who worked there anyway.   Of course customers also were held to a standard of sorts as well.  No coat, no service, and that was a hard one for the Sheriff to swallow.  So he usually didn't eat there.  It was the perfect setup for railroad travelers though, they could order ahead before arriving.  Pretty smart and effective.  Katie was one sharp, smart, capable woman and agent. She had a pretty good success rate in catching criminals even though a lot of people didn't like that fact that as a woman she was in that profession.  Well, she was capable with every place she worked but this newest gig was a serious challenge to her.  And she did cause a few disaster's in the kitchen along the way, but she didn't give up.
I liked her, liked the fact that she wasn't perfect, but she was caring, observant and a woman of faith.
The rules that went along with being one of the Harvey girls, was off the chart when it came to being obsessive but also unintentionally helped solve at least one mystery in the end.
Branch was also a man of faith, who was finding his faith being tested in several different instances.  I really liked the fact that Branch really saw Katie as he began to know her.  He found that he really liked and appreciated who she was; he saw her as beautiful.  Inside and out.
The story of Branch's son Andy was interesting with things that had been kept secret.  I liked both Branch and Andy.  Andy and his interactions with Katie both were fun and cute, when Katie wasn't helping rescue him.
There were several mysteries in play as the story went along.  There were twists, turns and surprises.
It was a clean story and the only reason I gave it a slightly lower rating on Amazon was because I did have trouble with the slower pace of the story.  But that's probably just me.

I received a copy of this book via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
