BOOK REVIEW- Sutherland's Secret

BOOK REVIEW- Sutherland's Secret-  Terror reigns in the aftermath of the Battle of Culloden. As British troops obliterate the last traces of the Jacobite cause, Brice Sutherland, the Earl of Dornach, risks everything to arrange a covert escape route to Canada for his fellow Scots. But when he encounters a dying Englishwoman, hauntingly beautiful though scarred by manacles and unable to speak, Brice's true courage is put to the test. Nothing but ruin could result from helping her, or worse: falling in love.
The pampered daughter of a marquess, Eleanor Hirst was the talk of the London season when she wed the Earl of Glendale. Little did she know that his posting as an officer in Scotland would be their undoing. Now her husband is dead and Eleanor is a fugitive in a hostile country. Desperate for help, she throws herself on the mercy of Brice Sutherland, a handsome Scottish warrior who should be her enemy. Instead, he cares for her tenderly, reviving her shattered spirit—and awakening urges unlike any she's ever known.  AMAZON

I really liked it, its Intense.  You feel the questions and the danger lurking, and it draws you in right away.    Both Eleanor and Brice are honorable people.  In her own words Eleanor said that she was a naive, spoiled woman when she first came to Scotland with her husband. While that seemed true, its also true because of what she went through she is no longer THAT woman.   Colonel Blackwood was a cruel and cunning enemy, not only to Elanor but to the Scottish people.  He was obsessive in his hunt for her, endangering not only her but also the people that she began to care for.   There are also colorful, brave and interesting people in the story as well, both men and women.  If you are looking for a sexless story, this isn't it.  There is several sexual encounters in this book.
The ending of the story is a surprise.  There is a HEA but also some of the problems in the story are solved with an unexpected twist.

By the way, the Acknowledgment to Nicholas Fantini at the end of the book made me smile!  What a humorous salute for his help.

I received an ARC of this book via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
