BOOK REVIEW- Dixie Moon

BOOK REVIEW- Dixie Moon -  Gabe Evans is a man of his word with strong convictions and steadfast loyalty. As the sheriff of Splendor, Montana, the ex-Union Colonel and oldest of four boys from an affluent family, Gabe understands the meaning of responsibility. The last thing he wants is another commitment—especially of the female variety.  Until he meets Lena Campanel...
Lena’s past is one she intends to keep buried. Overcoming a childhood of setbacks and obstacles, she and her friend, Nick, have succeeded in creating a life of financial success and devout loyalty to one another.   When an unexpected death leaves Gabe the sole heir of a considerable estate, partnering with Nick and Lena is a lucrative decision…forcing Gabe and Lena to work together. As their desire grows, Lena refuses to let down her guard, vowing to keep her past hidden—even from a perfect man like Gabe.  But secrets never stay buried… When revealed, Gabe realizes Lena’s secrets are deeper than he ever imagined. For a man of his character, deception and lies of omission aren’t negotiable. Will he be able to forgive the deceit? Or is the damage too great to ever repair?   AMAZON

Take the time to get to know the people of Splendor, Montana.  Its a small town that is growing fast.  Of course a lot of that is due to the miner's panning for gold and hitting strikes with them.  Where there is prosperity, there are people ready to steal it from others.  That is where one particular villain steps up to do just that.  William  Randolph Carlyle is just that man, and I'm thinking the way he's described he just might  be called a psychopath in this modern world.  Gabe and Lena have an interesting "friendship", with each having a few secrets of their own.  But I guess you could say that Lena's were a bit bigger.  She wanted Gabe, but she just didn't see how that could ever happen.  Her friend Nick had done as much as he could to protect her throughout her life but there was only so much he could do.  I liked their brother, sister relationship.  You could almost feel the tightness of that  not born in the same family but family by choice relationship.    This is a story that is often told at a slower pace, but Nick, Lena and Gabe were people to admire.   Even though each of them had lived such different lives.  I liked that this was a clean story and also that Lena was very much a businesswoman and she didn't earn her keep by selling her body in the saloon she co-owned with Nick.   There is a HEA to the story, with the opening for more adventures as this story ends with the news of someone coming for vengeance against one of the secondary people in this story.  There were plenty of secondary characters to choose from in this book, but it also gave it a small town becomes family kind of feel.  Well, if you don't count the different bad guys, but that is to be expected.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
