I liked the main characters. Mr. Upton proved who he was with his cowardly actions during the holdup. And his personality and character went downhill from there. Everyone has their plans on how they want to use Ruth but she really is smart and isn't going to give up without a fight. Eliza is a twit and I can see how her gossiping and pettiness gets on Ruth's last nerve. Ruth's guardian, Robert Grentham is so used to things going his way because he makes things happen. He doesn't care about Ruth's feelings about Upton, just as long as he benefits from it. Ruth's blue eyed stranger was a better man than she thought at first. He had self less reasons for his being a one time highwayman. There will also be several unexpected allies in this story too.
