Mr. Spock the cat suffers from a severe case of mistaken identity. As he innocently lounges in front of his home’s front window, watching the world go by, he alarms people. That’s because he’s four feet long and looks like a wild bobcat.
According to San Jose ABC News 7, Spock’s owner Colleen Pizarev regularly receives phone calls from concerned citizens thinking she’s housing a wild bobcat in her home. Animal Control has also been called several times to check out the situation.
“One person chastised me for having a wild animal in the house, saying that they thought it was a bobcat,” Pizarev told the San Jose Mercury News. “I said, ‘Look, there’s a tail, it’s not a bobcat. Trust me, it’s a regular cat.’”
But now most neighbors know that it’s just Spock, an extremely large housecat. Spock is a Maine Coon, which is the largest of the domestic cat breeds.
Spock measures almost 4 feet long and weighs 27 pounds. Pizarev says he eats more than a pound of food each day.
Having a cat that large requires an equal amount of work and diligence. Pizarev says, for example, Spock doesn’t like to be alone. Because of his size, he’s able to reach doorknobs so has learned how to open some doors. Pizerev and her husband have put deadbolts on doors they don’t want him to open. He hasn’t learned how to work those locks….yet.
Because of his size, Spock tends to break things in his path so Pizarev and her husband have taken to literally gluing down breakables, lest they fall victim to the accidental swipe of Spock’s long bushy tail. “It’s a lot like having a toddler in the house,” Pizarev tells ABC 7. “We have to Spock-proof the house.”
Luckily with Spock’s big size comes an abundance of cuteness. The breed is known for being gentle and loving. He also watches YouTube videos of birds to help him fall asleep at night.
