BOOK REVIEW- The Barbarian-An outcast and a pagan, KADAR THE NORTHMAN can't ignore the plea of a highborn Jewess who is desperate to recover her young son. Wronged by her power-hungry father, LYDIA ONIAS turns to the giant, blue-eyed barbarian who had been such a comfort during her bleakest moments. Denying their love as impossible to fulfill, Kadar and Lydia find more trouble when they align with Herod, whose power is threatened by palace conspiracies and murder.
But everyone's lives and future prospects are jeopardized when Jerusalem is attacked by an invading army. Kadar accompanies Herod to the dangerous courts of Cleopatra and Mark Antony to seek men and money to strike back. With Lydia and Herod's family stranded atop the water-starved heights of Masada, the fate of a nation and the woman he loves depend on the sword of... The Barbarian.

Intense. What a great story. I fell in love with both Kadar and Lydia and there were plenty of other memorable characters. I'm glad I didn't miss it. Sometimes the quick peak into another story at the end of book works when it comes to getting someones attention. It did in this case. I read the excerpt of this book in " The Warrior" and I wanted to know what was going to happen in Kadar and Lydia's lives. Both of them were of interest in The Warrior and I wondered if Lydia was going to find any happiness in this book and how much more was she going to have to go through? Quite a lot apparently. The pain and suffering just keeps on coming. It's about a romance as much as it was about wars, yes, more than one was going on. So of course that meant an intense story for that part alone. There was cruelty, injustice and Lydia's father was so ruthless when it came to greed and trying to climb the ladder for power. He would sacrifice any and all when it came to gaining a high religious position. He had already sacrificed Lydia to one marriage that brought an advantage to him and he was getting ready to do it again. I thought the writer did a good job portraying the state of affairs during those times, you get a real feel for it. There were also times of joy and tenderness too, especially when it came to Kadar's protectiveness towards Lydia. He fought to protect her even when it comes to protecting her against himself, He could clearly see the problems, he is a savage, a barbarian, there could be no future for them. They both know what stands against them but they also know that their hearts cry out to each other.
