BOOK REVIEW- HER FAVORITE HOT DOC

Romance isn’t on his mind when Dr. Logan Castle meets midwife McKenna Kirkpatrick, but give her time. She’s good at riling things up, and Logan soon learns he likes to be riled. Full of spunk, McKenna presents a challenge for the handsome head of her department when she joins Montclair Specialty Hospital. Ranked a Chicago Hot Doc, Logan favors established protocols while McKenna likes to push the envelope. 

I liked both McKenna and Logan and found some of their scenes together pretty funny.  I'm just going to drop a few hints here about some of that- 

• McKenna offering Logan a "certain" coffee mug; she gets her point across with just that mug.
• McKenna eating french fries at the Purple Frog while meeting with Logan...priceless!

Logan came across as compassionate but kind of staid, in his super need for organization.  
And of course McKenna, while being professional and caring is so far the other way; she's spontaneous and bold.  Too bad she's found a way to guard her heart by being a "buddy" or just a friend with guys, she even tries that with Logan.  Only problem is he isn't buying that.  
The story started out with a great birthing scene that I thought was so sweetly done.   Other subjects like midwifery, water births, a single pregnant mother, and the medical mission trip to Guatemala were also well done, and easy to "see" and feel. McKenna's family had a nice feel to them as well.
I'd say if I was giving this a title, it would be,
" An Okay, Easy Read."  
On a side note:
Hopefully this doesn't sound really like nit picking but its about the cover picture for this book.   In some ways it just doesn't fit the story. Although I liked the actual pose of the two of them together,  I remember reading that Logan had blond hair.  Another thing is that he was a classy dressing guy even when he was relaxing or sailing.   The shorts the guy on the cover is wearing, clash with that written description of him and his clothing style.  The rest of the cover was just fine.   I guess that could be seen as just a little thing or even maybe unimportant but since I'm a visual person (as well as a reading one) I just felt it could have been done just a tad better.

Nichole Murphy lost the love of her life, Seth.  They had plans to be married when a IED destroyed that dream.  After a year, she still couldn't get a grip on her new life without him.  

Army field medic Roberto ‘Cam’ Camareno was there when it happened. His best friend died in his arms and he was helpless to stop it.  His friends last request was that Cam would be there for Nichole and help her after his death.   How could he help her when his guilt at being the one still alive was eating him up?  Can Nichole love again?  And will Cam allow love to grow between them? 

There were quite a few differences between Cam and Nichole when it came to their childhood.  Cam came from extreme poverty and only had his mother to call his family.  Nichole's family wasn't rich, but they weren't poor either.  Especially not poor in the amount of family either.  There were many of them and they were a tight knit family.  Cam seemed to carry around a lot of guilt; even more than just surviving the blast that killed his friend and injured the rest of them in the jeep.    Guilt over how hard his mother's life has been, guilt  and shame over his dead alcoholic father.  Guilt over his attraction to Nichole.  
Nichole is attracted to Cam as well, but quickly gets over any feelings of guilt quicker than Cam.  She's finally ready to try to move on, like her mother and family keeps urging her to do.  But every time Cam opens up to her, when he seems to be getting too close he withdraws from her too.  He has secrets, and she still wonders what happened to Seth on the day he died.  
I think the author did a really good job of sharing the agony of war for those who survived. Also those that were injured both physically, mentally and emotionally.   She did also share some of the pain of those left behind.  I liked Nichole's quirky family and the back and forth dance between Nichole and Cam.  Cam's mom was enjoyable as well; couldn't help but like her.   Everyone was just trying to move on with their lives. 
If I was giving this a title for a review it would probably be something like, " A Pleasant Read even amongst the Sadness of War".

BOOK REVIEW- A HOPEFUL HEART

*My rating?  A Pretty decent Amish Story **

Hannah Glick, an Amish widow is working at the local hotel as a cleaning lady to help with finances after her husband's death. She loves her life in the Amish community but she also enjoys her work at the hotel. It leads her into the path of an outsider, non-Amish Trey Peterson. He lost his wife and daughter in a tragic accident and they are understand each other. Her brother in-law Joshua works with her on the horsefarm that he co-owned with his brother. He's been in love with Hannah for years. Which life will she choose is the question? And what will it cost her?
I liked the story, it was a romance after all, with all of the complications that come with it. I didn't like the manipulation that different people seemed to operate in when it came to Hannah. Even Joshua wasn't above it, even though no one really seemed to recognize it as such. Her mother-in-law? Eck, really unlikeable person. I guess every religion has one (well, at least one). Even Hannah's one daughter wasn't above rebellion and manipulation towards the end. Made for a pretty believable story though.
Is there a HEA? Well, Yes AND No. At least Hannah ends with love, but leaving one of your kids behind? Kind of hard to imagine. Was Hannah hoping that she could restore her relationship with her daughter? Yes. Not so sure if that would happen but hey, its supposed to be fiction, so I think I'll go with the idea she would.

BOOK REVIEW- WHEN YOU MAKE IT HOME

Bookstore owner, Meg Michaels just can't seem to catch a break when it comes to men.  To make things worse, she finds herself pregnant and in no hurry to have to explain anything about her situation, so she is hiding it.  She finds her secret is discovered while at a party for Theo Taylor, an Army medic who has been wounded while at war.  He agrees to keep her secret and their friendship begins to grow but there is plenty of trouble to deal with for both of them.  Is there any future beyond friendship for them?  Is even the friendship doomed?  Is this just one more person who is going to disappoint Meg and leave her high and dry?  
There were parts of this story that I liked and some that I wasn't as fond of.  How do I explain that statement?  I think Theo might be a good place to start.  Great idea and follow through on the struggles that he goes through on his being home.  He has trouble adjusting to being home and the pain of his injuries, although I'm not an expert, it felt like that was well written.  Couldn't help but like him, even when he kind of slipped in and out of being able to cope with everything.    I didn't like that he would disappear and people would try to call him because they were worried about him but he wouldn't call back.   But hey, that's true in real life too. 
What can I say about Meg?  I liked her. She was one messed up gal.  Likable, kind hearted but had  a whole lot of drama to deal with; some she caused herself. When you read more about her, you begin to understand some of her decisions.  In some ways a few things were predictable but there were plenty of twists and turns to keep your attention as well.   Boy, secrets, did her family ever have secrets.  Seemed like every time you turned around, you'd stumble over another one.   That's why I say "twists and turns".    One thing I didn't like was a stupid decision she made, and in keeping in character with her impulsive personality, I could see it coming.  I don't want to spoil the book so all I will say is, "Engagement ring from ex-fiance".  I'm reading it and practically screaming...."No, no, don't do it!!!!  This isn't gonna end well."   
Meg, did have some good friends around her which made for another interesting part of the story also.  
I did like how the story ended.   
Oh.  Just letting you know.  Meg might be pregnant but there was still sex going on.

BOOK REVIEW- THE STONES OF KALDAAR (Song of the Swords Book 1)

Taryn's life turned upside down as soon as she entered a portal with her grandfather, Brandt.  It leads into a  special cave that now places her in a new place, a different planet, a different world.   Everything changed in those moments.   She's been hidden from a world she knows nothing about to keep her safe until she reaches an age of maturity. Time isn't the same here as on Earth and she's even older than she thought, with a family that she didn't know she had.  A not very pleasant family at that.   According to everyone Aelinae is her real home world and suddenly she is supposed to pick up the heavy responsibility, that causes so many changes.  Its a world of magic, the magic of light and dark.  Its also a world of the question, "who really is a friend, and who is trying to use me?"  Taryn is used to living with discipline but even more so, her own free will.  She has mysterious powers and she accepts the help of Rhoane, a man who promises to protect her, but whom she's not sure she can trust.   As tensions mount and her loved ones are threatened, Taryn must confront an ancient enemy and stop a sinister plan to bring back a banished god. On Aelinae they say there can be no Light without Dark and no darkness without light.    To bring balance to this world, is what some say is her destiny.  All she knows is,  "She can't afford to fail."
One of the first things I noticed right away was that there sure seemed to be a lot of people in the story, and their numbers just seemed to keep increasing.  That made it a bit tough for me at first trying to keep them all straight.  That and the names of the animals as well.  The fantasy world itself was well built as was the many people that I mentioned.   Some of the strange names of items or phrases wasn't as hard for me to figure out, although there is a glossory at the back of the book if you need help.  That was a nice touch. 
Rhoane was someone that was a bit hard to get to  know at first.  Although he has promised to protect Taryn and seems to have her best interests at heart, there always seems to be more things that he hasn't told anyone; especially Taryn.  Not exactly awe inspiring when it comes to the trust being well developed between them.  Taryn did have a lot tossed at her all at once, so I can see where some things were held back from her.  I made for a good tension between Rhoane and Taryn. There is a bond between them, but they still have to work out their relationship, just like anyone else.  

On the downside for me, was the several times where it was woman on woman (man on man) sex scenes.  This made it hard for me in knowing how to rate this book.  The fantasy world, the people, their enemies, the magic, the animals, the culture of this place are in my mind done really well with an ending which left an opening for more adventures.  It ended some things, but didn't really completely end to my way of thinking.  
My last thought on the book?  Loved the cover picture for the Book!

BOOK REVIEW- CROSS EXAMINATION

 Tamara Slay runs with her daughter Gabby, from an abusive husband.  She wants to live and be safe, starting a new life with her daughter.   Lt. Martin Beck is a sheriff's deputy and has a mission of his own.  He's been chasing a serial killer and he believes that Scott Slay is the man who killed Brandy Fuller and seven other women on the Florida Gulf coast.  Things dead end for years until he finds Tamara Slay.  He believes she's the lead he needs.  Things could turn even more deadly as Tamara and Martin begin to spend more time together, and two hurting people find themselves drawn to each other.  The danger is still out there waiting for them, and Scott is a man you really don't want to upset!  

I found this book seemed to be longer on being a suspense/thriller than on the romance part.  I probably would have liked it more, if I felt there was more of a connection between Tamara and Beck. The first part of suspense/mystery, I thought was done pretty well.  Scott, was creepy scary and eerily smart.  Scott played quite the mean, cat and mouse game with Tamara, Gabby and Beck.  Even the whole law enforcement community. He just always kept seeming to find Tamara, no matter where she was.  Sometimes it almost felt it was way too easy for him; which wasn't really explained all that well how he was able to do it so consistently.  Later in the book, there was a mention of a possibility of how he might be doing it, but it felt a bit thin.  You notice, I didn't mention the why here?  It's because I don't want to give anything away.  
As for the romance/attraction between Tamara and Beck, it was kind of stiff and hard for me to really believe.  Yes, they both had a lot of challenges to overcome, so I understand that.  Also the fact that they were trying to resist each other, so I understand that too.  Those parts were written fairly well.  Its just that they seemed to fall in love way too soon; without really knowing each other.   At least that's how it felt to me.  Maybe I was missing something?    And don't even get me started on some of the "dumb" decisions she made along the way.  
Would I read any other books by this author?  Yes.  Even feeling like she left me with some questions on this book. A few things were left unanswered.  Critical to the story?   No, probably most people wouldn't think so.  But.... Did Pratt ever have face his comeuppance on his behaviors?  I would have hoped so. 
The "Epilogue", was a nice touch at the end, not answering some questions but giving a good end anyway.  
Just also wanted to note that I thought the cover picture was very attractive and seemed a pretty good choice, in keeping with the story content.

BOOK REVIEW- LIKE A FLOWER IN BLOOM

Charlotte Withersby  loves her life as it is. She is free to pursue her passion for botany without restraint or the convention of society.  She takes care of her widower father and tries to keep everything in line without it all falling down on them.    When her uncle thinks, marriage is what is best for her, her father falls in line with it way too easy.  When Mr. Trimble shows up, the plan to show her father he needs her  instead is thwarted.  Mr. Trimble is a botanist correspondent from New Zealand, who ends up filling the void as an assistant extremely well.  Now a new plan is needed, she will pretend to look for a husband and show her father just how much he will miss and need her when she has her own household to run.  Suddenly she's thrust into society with rules she can't make sense of and there are real men interested in her. 
"Oh, what a web we weave"......

I found this story to be slow moving, and detailed but not without its charms.  Charlotte was fun to listen to as you read and hear her genuine confusion when she didn't get the response she expected, to her honest speaking.  Also clever was her confusion over fashion and of the "why" of the need for some of it.  Her suitors were fairly well developed in personality as was her friend Miss Templeton (who I really liked).  Charlotte's uncle, The Admiral was someone that I didn't care for at first, but then as time went on, we were given more insight into his true character.  
I know that Charlotte was disappointed in having her position at home filled and her life's work practically coming to nothing, but she was often so childish in her resentment towards Edward Trimble.  Of course he often came across as disapproving and critical of her although at times he did end up helping her as well.   I could see the sparks from their battles but I really didn't feel the sparks of attraction part.  I know Trimble had so many hidden secrets but I almost felt that so much of his true personality was hidden as well.

Wow, what a story!
I can't tell you how many times I thought, "Wow I never saw THAT coming!"
This was a true "Alice fell through the rabbit hole of Science Fiction."  I enjoyed every minute of it, with all the twists and turns.   It was an out-there story to be sure.  Not so far out there that it wasn't easy to flow with though.  There is no romance story in this one. Or very deep,deep relationships delved into but I still enjoyed it just the same. 
I wouldn't mind reading more stories from this author, since I thought the author has quite the interesting imagination.

Question: You mentioned in your story about receiving tongues that it took some time to get it down right and a year before you spoke in tongues in front of anyone. My question is, "How long did it take before you felt fluent? Did you stumble over yourself for a while and how long? Did you keep thinking you were repeating the same thing over again? And because of these things all going on in your head, how long did it take before you felt you were not making it up?"

Well, it doesn’t need to take you as long as it took me. I am not even sure how long it took me as I received the gift of speaking in tongues 40 years ago. Here is how you can shorten the awkward phase as you begin speaking in tongues:

Give your mind something to do which facilitates the process, rather than sitting there in judgment of the process.

So I tell my mind, “You do not need to judge each syllable to try to determine if it is a language or not” (not that my mind even has the capacity to perform such a function).

“Instead, I want you to picture the throne room as John did in Revelation 4, and see the multitude worshipping before His throne, and then picture us entering in with them in worship to the King Who is seated upon the throne.”

Now my mind if facilitating the spiritual encounter of worshipping in tongues, and the flow of tongues expands more quickly and easily. Try this for several days and see where it takes you.

BOOK REVIEW- UNDER MY SKIN

Jeanne is a one of a kind woman who is a bartender, waitress, who is in the running to possibly own the bistro La Boheme if everything comes together.  Jeanne may be kind hearted but she also is someone who speaks her mind.  A hunky stranger walks into the bistro expecting her to remember him, but he's changed so much, there's no way she could.  But they do have a history of sorts.  But Mat is no longer that geeky guy that followed Jeanne around like a puppy dog wanting her attention.  He's got ambitions towards politics and has a girlfriend that will help him get where he wants to go in that arena.  He might still have warm feelings towards Jeanne but she just isn't the kind of woman he can tangle with.    He also can't seem to stay away either.  

I'm still smiling.
I wanted to read this one for quite some time.  Having read all the other stories in this series (so far), this one just kept calling to me.  For one reason or another I never quite got around to it but put it on my Amazon wishlist.  When the author offered me an opportunity to read it; I jumped at the chance.  When I got it and started reading I thought, "Oh, please be good, I don't want to be disappointed".  I wasn't.  I had liked Jeanne from the other books and was glad to get more into her story. Mat had quite the changes when it came to his appearance and confidence.  He changed from the "toad" look to a "hunk". The tension between the two of them developed really nicely.  I think this story might just be my favorite of all the Bistro La Bohème stories.
On a couple of side notes: 
I really liked the song lyrics that Mat listened to, that Cyril had released as a new song.  It also helped explain the title of this book.  Very appropriate. 
The other thing I found interesting is the way each new chapter was listed in the front.  Not the usual Chapter 1 or 2 but with Month's or Event Title (but not enought to give it away).

Promotion Is Here and It's Not Too Late  Something new is happening in the spiritual realm between February 8 and March 8. God is promoting those who have made it through the extreme testing that has taken place over the past seven years. 

But there are many people who bailed out on the process that God was doing in their hearts and lives. Starting in February, God is calling those who bailed out to get back into God's timing and process. This is a time of recovery for those who laid down their greater calling. Rebecca Smith's business, Better Life Bags, is broadening horizons for local women. 

It all started five years ago when Smith made her son a diaper bag and proudly posted it online. People began asking her to make bags for them. They quickly became so popular she couldn't keep up. 

But, instead of outsourcing production, she turned to her neighborhood for help. 

"The unemployment rate in Hamtramck is high. The women here know how to sew and needed jobs. This gives them a way to provide for their families", says business owner Rebecca Smith.  

The 32-year-old now focuses on hiring women who cannot work outside of the home due to cultural beliefs. She also employs women like Cassandra Grimes, who was once afraid to let her children play outside of their Detroit home. 

Grimes, a single mother of four, was struggling to feed her kids when she by chance ran into Smith on the street. They became friends and Smith taught her how to sew and make Better Life Bag key fobs. 

Eventually, Grimes was able to move her family from Detroit to Hamtramck and completely leave the welfare system.

When plucky single mother Leda Plett goes next door to retrieve her wandering pooch, she doesn’t expect to find a handsome stranger lounging about like he owns the place. She certainly doesn’t expect him to go all “white knight” about her deadbeat ex, or her knees to go all wobbly at his sexy smile. 
Rodeo-star turned agent Eric Anders is used to managing people and clearly, the boots-and-sundress wearing mouthy mama needs someone to manage her. He wants to help; her spirited spark and quick wit have nothing to do with it. 
But when Eric’s good intentions end up bringing only hurt and humiliation, he’s forced to face the fact that he doesn’t always know best. Leda is stronger and wiser than he knew, and his arrogance may have just cost him the one girl he now can’t live without. 

 I liked this story mainly because of the main characters and especially that sassy, tough Leda, who had such a tender heart.  She just seemed to amp life up when she was faced with awkward situations.   There is a eleven year age difference between Eric and Leda, but because of her upbringing and life situations, she's older in her approach to life in some ways.   She had quite the creative way of trying to clean up her language with made up words to replace swear words, because she has a baby that she wants to raise right.   That alone got really funny.  
Eric, was usually  putting his foot in his mouth when he was around Leda, but like he says, "he was only trying to help".  Eric, enjoys her spunk even when its leveled at him, which leads to some interesting conversations.

BOOK REVIEW- Annie (The Brides of San Francisco Book 2)

Annie Markum was raised to be an obedient daughter, her father is a disapproving, joyless, rigid preacher who was sure only a church-going man was the only one he could approve of to marry his daughter. When she becomes a mail order bride to such a man, things didn't turn out as good as she had hoped.  She finds herself  widowed with no money, or help and very, very soon to be a mother.  She goes to the only friends she can think of , hoping to find work so that she can return to her father in New York.  She finds work  as a cook but in a local saloon, the very last place her father would ever approve of.  But pride doesn't pay the bills and she doesn't want to sponge off her friends and she will do whatever she needs to for her new baby girl.   Nick Cartwright met Annie at their friends wedding and just before her own.  He wanted her then and a year later he still does.  He's a saloon owner and he knows that is a major stumbling block in his desire to marry her.  Things begin to shift when Annie finds out all the money from her dead husband isn't gone, she will become a  rich woman soon.  Ah, but money never really was the problem between them.  There is another problem though, a hidden enemy not only wants Nick but also Annie's riches and is more than willing to kill to get it all.  
I liked this story although part of it was predictable, but there were a few surprises toward the end especially.  Annie had quite the struggle to deal with, her desire for Nick and her long held belief's that his owning a saloon was evil.   The author did a good job of showing that battle; although maybe that could have been a little shorter.  I also realize though as readers we don't want to see things dealt with too quickly, we see that as unreasonable.  Nellie Malone and her husband Blake, turned out to be quite the good friends in her time of need. It made me wish I had also read  their story, "Nellie" in Book 1. And Nick Cartwright, turned out to have more goodness in him than her father would have ever credited him with.  I liked him.  He put up with a lot from Annie but was always there for her.  He was always there for other people too.  He was a hero of course; a charming, slightly mischievous one of course.

BOOK REVIEW- IMMINENT DANGER..AND HOW TO FLY STRAIGHT INTO IT

Eris Miller, feels she doesn't fit in anywhere but still she does end up with a scholarship to an elite school.  Everything was going along as normal; until she is abducted by scaly six- armed aliens.  She finds herself on board an alien spaceship on her way to be sold, when Varrin shows up.  He's a swashbuckling pirate with his own agenda, and charming as all get out.  Did things just get better for her...or not?  

I liked this story although at times Eris made some silly decisions in who she trusted but then again she's young.   Varrin and his arrogant self confidence was quite funny at times.  The author did a good job of not only describing different aliens and their attitudes  but also the interactions between Eris, Varrin and some of the "people" (aliens) that they meet along the way.  Varrin has made quite a few enemies as he has been on his own but there was also a whole lot to him than it seems. Other than looking out for himself being his main concern, you are always wondering what he's up to.  It seems like half the galaxy was after him, and then of course anyone around him.  Eris made some interesting friends as she is boucing around the universe as well.  Miguri is one of those unusual alien friends, that I enjoyed. 
There was at least one moment when Eris finds herself in an alien lab that made me squirm (no I'm not telling you what it was) but at least it didn't really go into graphic detail.  For that I am thankful.
The story  was completed but did leave the opening for more adventures.

With this scarf knitting pattern, you can create a lovely scarf 

 in two hours or less. The chunky yarn from Lion Brand Yarn will keep you warm and stylish through the winter. The fringe, created after knitting the scarf, is a nice touch and very easy to do.  You can save this scarf for yourself or give it as a gift during the holiday season - it will surely come in handy during the cold  winter months.  You only need three skeind of yarn for this projects, so you won't break the bank trying to complete this project. Gather up three of your favorite yarn colors and start working on this project - it's one of the easiest free knitting patterns you can make.

Materials:

• Lion Brand VANNA'S CHOICE (Art. #860)
  • #143 Antique Rose 1 ball (A)
  • #140 Dusty Rose 1 ball (B)
  • #125 Taupe 1 ball (C)
• Knitting needles size 19 (15 mm)
• Large-eyed blunt needle

Instructions:

Gauge:
8 stitches = 4" (10 cm) in Garter stitch (knit every stitch on every row) with 3 strands (1 strand each of A, B, and C) held together.

Scarf:
With 1 strand of A, B and C held together, cast on 16 stitches. Work in Garter stitch (knit every stitch on every row) until piece measures about 45" (114.5 cm) from beginning. Bind off.

Finishing:
Weave in ends.

Fringe:
For each Fringe cut 2 lengths of each color, 22" (56 cm) long. Fold strands in half, pull fold through end of Scarf. Pull strands through fold and tighten. Make 8 Fringe along each end of Scarf.
