I had a hard time rating this book because there were parts I liked and others not so much. So I have to give it 3.5 Stars.
Right off the bat I have to say that I liked Samantha(Sam) and she sure had her plate full. She's smart, caring and sassy. Yes, that sassy part I liked a lot. Maybe I missed something by not having read the previous book but I found it really hard to like Carter. And I didn't really feel any romantic connection between Samantha and Carter. He just seemed to be there SOMETIMES and then he's gone. I can see why Sam was irritated by all his secrets. He just felt like a "kinda boyfriend", even though he did help her at times too. So no, I never did warm to him.
The actual murder mystery was actually pretty good. Was there a murder or wasn't there was the question of the day. This was just one of several questions that need to be uncovered. Providing plenty of twists and turns. So that part I did like. The humor in the story was good too, especially when it came to Sam's insights about how elevators either worked or didn't work in her favor. I called it, elevator humor.
It's amazing how many demanding people who just HAD to speak to Sam immediately. Detective Washington was one of those people ans so was the lawyer, Rufus Kingsbury. And for a while it didn't seem that she was ever going to get much sleep.
Mysteries do get solved which was satisfying. However I was less satisfied with how the rest of the book finished.
