Book Review- The Body Next Door(Samantha Newman Mystery Series Book 2) by Gay Yellen

As she wades through the muck of rumors and accusations, she questions the assumptions she’s made about her past and her future, and must rethink the life she wants to live.  AMAZON LINK

I had a hard time rating this book because there were parts I liked and others not so much. So  I have to give it 3.5 Stars.
Right off the bat I have to say that I liked Samantha(Sam) and she sure had her plate full.  She's smart, caring  and sassy.  Yes, that sassy part I liked a lot.  Maybe I missed something by not having read the previous book but I found it really hard to like Carter.    And I didn't really feel any romantic connection between Samantha and Carter.  He just seemed to be there SOMETIMES and then he's gone.  I can see why Sam was irritated by all his secrets.  He just felt like a "kinda boyfriend", even though he did help her at times too. So no, I never did warm to him.
The actual murder mystery was actually pretty good.  Was there a murder or wasn't there was the question of the day.  This was just one of several questions that need to be uncovered.  Providing plenty of twists and turns.  So that part I did like. The humor in the story was good too, especially when it came to Sam's insights about how elevators either worked or didn't work in her favor.  I called it, elevator humor.
It's amazing how many demanding people who just HAD to speak to Sam immediately.  Detective Washington was one of those people ans so was the lawyer,  Rufus Kingsbury.  And for a while it didn't seem that she was ever going to get much sleep.
Mysteries do get solved which was satisfying.  However I was less satisfied with how the rest of the book finished.

Book Review- Built for Love (Carlisles Series, #3) by Lori Foster

Some loves are built to last in Lori Foster's sizzling new novella

Contractor Jesse Baker knows all about knocking down walls—but chipping away at Tonya Bloom's defenses has been tougher than he expected. The gorgeous blonde has made it clear she doesn't have room in her life for romance...so what is it about her that makes Jesse determined to prove her wrong?

Realtor Tonya is an expert on houses, but building a home—and family—for her newly orphaned nephew, Kevin, is a challenge she never expected. And while Jesse might be a shoulder to lean on, he's also a distraction she can't afford. But with Jesse set on winning her heart, will she realize once and for all that the perfect love doesn't always happen at the perfect time?  AMAZON LINK

4 Stars

This is a sweet but also emotional story.  Some of that sweetness definitely comes from Jesse.  What a good guy he is. He's hardworking, smart and sensitive when he needs to be. Oh, yes he's also described as a hunk.

Tonya is a good gal too but so over her head when it comes to her nephew Kevin.  She's trying so hard to help him but she'd be the first to admit that she doesn't know what she's doing.  She is surrounded with a few good people that are wiling to help her though and that adds to the story.

The story made me smile a time or two and also has some heat between Jesse and Tonya.

A good ending to the story dot's all the "'i's" and crosses all the "t's" putting another smile on my face.

When I saw the name of this author comes up, I was quick to grab this book. Having read a few of her books in the past I remember really liking them.  And the same holds true for this book.  It was an edgy story with unpredictable things happening.  Dangerous unpredictable things that often reached out to other people than just Leah and Clint.  It didn't take long for me to be pulling for Leah and then Clint and the both of them together.  He had it right they did make for a good team.

The action was both fast and fierce when it came to the conspiracy.  I hate bullies and this story seemed to teem with them.  But that's not to get discouraged because there were also plenty of good guys.  They were praying and dong things in the natural that they could to get to the bottom of things and get justice.
It had just a dramatic ending as you could expect ending with a good Epilogue.

5 STARS

What a surprise this book turned out to be.  It wasn't anything like I was expecting.

Towards the end of Chapter 1 comes one of the best startling surprises.  Didn't see that coming.  But that is NOT the last of the surprises that are coming.  This book was filled with surprises.  That didn't make it overwhelming though just a story with plenty of depth.

Both Cole and Rhyne were really good main characters that kept me interested in their lives and outcomes.  Even Cole's sister Whitley causes plenty of interest and humor at times.  She is one loyal, caring, headstrong, creative young man.  And she'd do anything for her brother; and does. A real firecracker was how she was described by one of the women of the community.

The Abbot family was one odd group.  Right at the top of the list is, Runt Abbot but there are reasons for that.  Mean- to- the- bone is the father of the family, Judah Abbot.  And he proves it time after time in both the history that is remembered and the current time.  I was kind of hoping for more justice when it came to him.

One thing that I didn't realize until I started reading was that this story is set in 1884. Still it managed to keep things rolling without feeling old.  Something that did feel like it might not fit had to do with earrings.  In one scene there was talk about earrings not working because the Rhyne didn't have pierced ears.  Was that a common thing in 1884?  I don't know but it didn't keep me from enjoying the story.

The people of the town were also a good part of the story.  They added a lot of interest and support.  It made me smile when it came to Will still being called "that no-account Beatty boy."  He was a grown man now and to all appearance a really good man.  Quite the nickname of sorts that came from people in the small town.  It stuck.  Other people were known by other "handles" like Runt.

The story has more good "stingers" when it comes to surprises at the end.  So like I said, what a good surprise the book turned out to be.  I liked how it ended.  I would like to see a story about Whitley though because that gal has promise.

Book Review- Samantha Watkins: Chronicles of an Extraordinary Ordinary Life by Aurélie Venem

Young librarian Samantha Watkins has always been perfectly content with her humdrum existence. Never easily fitting in with anyone anywhere, she feels most at ease in silence, among stacks of books. Sam believes in leaving fantasy and drama to the characters in her beloved novels. But one night when she leaves work late, she finds herself center stage in a tale of vengeance and terror.

Together they investigate a series of mysterious disappearances and attempt to save the human race from a horrible fate. Battling vampires thrills and empowers Sam, but where does she stand with supernatural Phoenix? Could Phoenix, through their work together, become a different man?  AMAZON LINK

5 STARS

This was a great roller-coaster of a ride ! There is plenty of action, mysteries, emotions and dangers. I will say.. there was a lot of eye rolling especially by Phoenix..a bit overdone to my way of thinking. i will say though that there  is also some really good world building as well.
Samantha and Phoenix made for really interesting main characters. I know that Sam found herself in some tense, dangerous, scary times but at one point I wanted to slap her for some of her "tantrums." Still I had to give her points for being smart and courageous and pretty creative in some of her situations. Even with her tantrums I still wanted to see her have a good outcome and maybe even some romance. The question of her black eyes wasn't answered in this book although it sure created a lot of interest by other vampires. Another question came up this time about Phoenix. Was he really the cold fish he seemed to be? Hmm, it seems like that might not totally be the case.
Two of Phoenix's MANY MANY years old friends show up in the story adding more drama. Francois I liked, Karl not so much.
Sam develops a friendship with several people in the area, Angela, Dannie and Matt. They enrich her life but complicate it as well.
I loved all the adventure of the story but I was startled by the ending. Because I was left a bit hanging like in a cliffhanger. Or if I want to look at it another way, it leaves the door open for more adventures. I still felt like this book deserves 5 Stars just because it was so good and so full.

**Book Review- Tamed by the Lyon by Chasity Bowlin

Historical Fiction , Romance

Description

Enter the world of the most notorious gambling den in London, where matches are made... unusually. Welcome to the world of THE LYON'S DEN: The Black Widow of Whitehall Connected World, where the underground of Regency London thrives... and loves.

It was their first kiss, possibly her first kiss ever. All the more reason to get it right.

Abandoned at the altar by her groom in favor of her younger sister, Miss Madeline Keyes has become an object of pity, scorn and scandal. Rather than flee to the countryside to rusticate as a spinster with her less than loving parents, she seeks the aid of Mrs. Bessie Dove-Lyon to snare a titled husband and, through marriage, reclaim her place in society.

Lord Oliver Easton, Earl of Foxmore, has always preferred plants to people. As a younger son, he had no expectations of marriage. But with the loss of both his father and brother in a very short span of time, the death taxes levied on the estate leave him at risk of losing his life’s work. So he does the only sensible thing and takes his brother’s place in the matchmaking scheme helmed by the owner of the Lyon’s Den.

It was supposed to be a marriage of convenience only. A chance to rescue her reputation and his fortunes. But neither of them expected the ultimate complication—to fall in love.

I found myself really enjoying this story.   It didn't take me very long at all to be cheering for Madeline.  She had been so taken for granted and overlooked so much of her life.  It was so unfair when she sure was a better person than her selfish sister, Coraline.  Wow, what a piece of nasty work she was.  Ever since childhood people (especially her parents) scurried to avoid her epic tantrums.

I liked Oliver who was way over his head when it came to now being the Earl.  Having been a second son, it wasn't something that he ever thought he'd have to deal with.  But he is essentially a good man.

Someone else that I liked was Mrs. Bessie Dove-Lyon.  She added some spice to the story.  I wonder if there will be more stories of her "arrangements.'' I hope so.

Although there isn't a lot of intense action, it is a good story.  I kept waiting to see Madeline vindicated and it happens in style.  The story made me smile and I liked the H.E.A. ending.

BOOK REVIEW- All Night Long with a Cowboy (Kittredge Ranch Book 2) by Caitlin Crews *

If you play with fire…

One of the most notorious cowboys in Cold River, Jensen Kittredge always has willing women with sweet smiles vying for a place in his bed. So when the prissy high school librarian sidles up to him in the most disreputable bar in town with a scowl on her face, he has no idea what to make of it. Much less the attraction he feels toward the bespectacled creature who wants something from him… but not that.
Yet.

Someone gets burned…

Harriett Barnett doesn’t care for dens of iniquity— or the insolent cowboy she certainly shouldn’t find attractive. But one of her students needs her help, and if she needs to corral the infamous Jensen to save him, she will. Trouble is, the town’s favorite Kittredge brother is a lot more than she bargained for. Harriett's happy little life is orderly and neat, just how she likes it—until Jensen blows it all apart with his particular brand of addictive passion. Can a modern-day schoolmarm really tame the wildest cowboy in town? Or is Harriet headed for a terrible fall?  AMAZON LINK

4 STARS

This story has a slow start reminding me that the lazy pace was almost as lazy as Jensen appeared to be. At times it felt like not a lot was going on but I enjoyed the complex main characters more than enough to keep going. While I liked this story, I can't say that I loved it.

The opening chapter shows Harriet as a really staid, kind of stuffy woman. She's also kind of odd for a woman her age. Although as I read about how she grew up, it was easier to se why she had a hard time fitting in. And as the story goes on I began to see that she really wasn't stuffy but just a woman who stubbornly marched to her own drummer. But then so did Jensen when it came to marching to his own drummer. It was totally different from Harriet but it also was his way of hiding and protecting himself and others. Harriet is passionate and intense and she doesn't try to hide it. At first I thought Jensen was her direct opposite. But was he? He definitely has the passionate part down pat. Even though he doesn't let too many people get very close. But Harriet just bulldozers her way in. He often likened her to a tiny tornado of determined focus. That led to some funny moments too.
Aiden Hall is a young man who plays a part in their story too.
The story was so good when it came to the descriptions of places, you could almost see them.
As you can imagine the story is also emotional, with some secrets that need to be faced and overcome. And they do leading to a good ending to the story.

*Book Review- The Duke Who Loved Me by Jane Ashford

Historical Fiction , Romance

The Duke of Tereford is accustomed to getting his own way, but she's going to teach him a thing or two about love...

James Cantrell, the new Duke of Tereford, has inherited a dukedom in disarray and is overwhelmed by his unaccustomed responsibilities. Then he gets an idea. Cecelia Vainsmede served as liaison between James and her father, and she knows a great deal about business matters, his own in particular. She's also quite pretty. Ever the pragmatist, he suggests a marriage of convenience.

Cecelia has always been good at working with James, but she doesn't understand how he can be so obtuse. He clearly doesn't realize that he's the duke she's always wished for, or that his offer is an insult. But when a German prince arrives in London and immediately sets out to woo Cecelia, James will have to come to terms with what he really feels for her. Is running away worth the cost of losing her, or will the duke dare to win her once and for all?  AMAZON LINK

3.5 STARS

The beauty of this eBook cover drew me in. It was just so beautiful.   Even the potential of the story did somewhat too. I had high hopes for the story but I ended up somewhat disappointed.  I didn't hate it but I didn't love it either.  I will say that it did have some good moments  that I did like though.

Cecelia and James couldn't be more different when it came to how they viewed responsibilities.  Cecelia was so good at them that she was often overcome with a load of them.  All of it fell on her shoulders at a very young age.  Starting because of the unawareness or concern on both her father and Aunt's part.  James was so selfish that he barely noticed he had any. He was entitled and concerned with fashion and "man" things for the most part.  In the beginning I really didn't like him.

There were a couple of interesting secondary people in the story.  I found myself getting more interested in the story when the Gardener family showed up. They began to touch his compassion and you can see he began to grow up a bit more.

Of course, he's not all the way there yet so there will be more ups and downs for him and his always needing to win.

The ending was okay and because of the parts I did like I will be giving it 3.5 stars on Amazon when it opens for reviews.

Bobby Conner 6/10/18- The Gathering

BOOK REVIEW- The Magnolia Story (with Bonus Content) by Chip & Joanna Gaines with Mark Dagostino

This eBook includes the full text of the book plus an exclusive additional chapter from Chip and Joanna that is not found in the hardcover!
Are you ready to see your fixer upper?
These famous words are now synonymous with the dynamic husband-and-wife team Chip and Joanna Gaines, stars of HGTV’s Fixer Upper. As this question fills the airwaves with anticipation, their legions of fans continue to multiply and ask a different series of questions, like—Who are these people? What’s the secret to their success? And is Chip actually that funny in real life? By renovating homes in Waco, Texas, and changing lives in such a winsome and engaging way, Chip and Joanna have become more than just the stars of Fixer Upper, they have become America’s new best friends.
The Magnolia Story is the first book from Chip and Joanna, offering their fans a detailed look at their life together. From the very first renovation project they ever tackled together, to the project that nearly cost them everything; from the childhood memories that shaped them, to the twists and turns that led them to the life they share on the farm today.
They both attended Baylor University in Waco. However, their paths did not cross until Chip checked his car into the local Firestone tire shop where Joanna worked behind the counter. Even back then Chip was a serial entrepreneur who, among other things, ran a lawn care company, sold fireworks, and flipped houses. Soon they were married and living in their first fixer upper. Four children and countless renovations later, Joanna garners the attention of a television producer who notices her work on a blog one day.
In The Magnolia Story fans will finally get to join the Gaines behind the scenes and discover:
  • The time Chip ran to the grocery store and forgot to take their new, sleeping baby
  • Joanna’s agonizing decision to close her dream business to focus on raising their children
  • When Chip buys a houseboat, sight-unseen, and it turns out to be a leaky wreck
  • Joanna’s breakthrough moment of discovering the secret to creating a beautiful home
  • Harrowing stories of the financial ups and downs as an entrepreneurial couple
  • Memories and photos from Chip and Jo’s wedding
  • The significance of the word magnolia and why it permeates everything they do
  • The way the couple pays the popularity of Fixer Upper forward, sharing the success with others, and bolstering the city of Waco along the way
And yet there is still one lingering question for fans of the show: Is Chip really that funny? “Oh yeah,” says Joanna. “He was, and still is, my first fixer upper.”  AMAZON

What a wild ride this couple has been on. And it made for good reading.

Joanna was a follow the rules, in the box thinker who plays things safe. Well, she was before she met and married risk taker, Chip.
I found the explanation about the Magnolia flower interesting and it showed how appropriate the title of this book is. Of and of course how they used that name in many places too.
I liked how the book flowed as Joanna and Chip's P.O.V.'s were shared. I also liked how their faith in God was shared. They began to see the many just in time miracles that showed up in their lives when they trusted God and did the right things.
One of my favorite things was when Joanna said that Chip was wild at heart. What a great, fitting, description. I've watched the Fixer Upper show quite a few times and thought that Chip was a fun, kind of goofy guy. It was good to see that he was SO much more too. Got to look at some of the 'inner workings" of the man. It also answered the question of whether or not his real name was Chip or not.
Joanna said something that was easy for me to relate to and it was good to see that it wasn't just me. She doesn't like her house to be messy (or cluttered). If it's too messy, she can't think straight. I totally get that.

They've learned a lot through their whole process to date; both together and individually. It benefited other people as well as their children too.

There is a Q & A at the end of the book with both Joanna and Chip.
I read this story for free through Prime Reading.

Description

A woman on the run must trust her family's sworn enemy in this thrilling tale by one of the best in cowboy romance.

The cowboy she can’t have . . . is the one she can’t resist.

4 STARS

This was a full story with interesting main characters and included drawing a picture of a well detailed world building.  The areas, the families even down to the foods. There were a few times when it went on a bit too long with some of that.  But you could feel the community sense to the story.

Jonah was so skilled and was often a slight contradiction when it came to not only being a cowboy but other things as well. I'll let the new readers discover those things.  He was also a good guy all the way through.

The Merrick family was a great group of people who added so much to the story.  No matter what they were there for not only family but stepped up for others too.  They were one formidable force.

The feud between the two families is well explained and serves up quite a bit of emotion but it's not the only emotional times.

The dangers to  Annie is real and she has some powerful forces trying to take her out. That part of the story was really good with surprise after surprise showing up.  Dramatic ending with a good Epilogue.

Book Review- Legacy (Montgomery Brothers Book 1) by Laura Pavlov

 Ford
I don’t have time for distractions.
I have a billion-dollar company to run. A father to grieve.
A legacy to fulfill.
Harley DeLuca is not my type.
She’s snarky.
She's stubborn.
And she’s the most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen—even in her ridiculous grungy tennis shoes.
I can’t get enough of her.

Harley
I was a mistake from the moment of conception.
The sins of my mother have followed me like a nightmare in a horror flick.
I’m determined to make a life for myself, free of my past.
I have three goals.
Open a bakery.
Keep Gramps safe.
And forget that I’m Valentina DeLuca’s daughter.
There’s no room in my life for a man.
Especially an arrogant, condescending jerk like Ford Montgomery.
But now he's my business partner.
My friend.
And if I'm not careful, he just might be—everything. AMAZON LINK

4.5 STARS

When this book first started out I thought, "Okay, nice but probably nothing all that different from others I've read." I'm glad that I kept reading.  I did mainly because I liked spunky, hardworking, Harley a lot.  And the conversations between Harley and Ford started to be quite interesting and sometimes later on funny.

Gramps is Harley's only worthwhile family member that is still living.  I say worthwhile because her mother Valentina is one piece of selfish, evil work.  And her father is referred to as her, "sperm donor''.  Harley does have a really good friend, Molly who has her back and also works in the bakery.

What Harley lacks in family, Ford has in spades.  Good family members, like his brothers, Jack and Harrison.   Jack added a lot of humor to the story and Harrison was a bit more on the quiet, serious side.  They are a warm family and that includes his mother too.  They are still suffering from the loss of their father/husband. He had been a good man who died too soon.

Valentina brings all kinds of danger into Harley's current life and it's nothing to ignore.  And Ford isn't about to.  In fact, his brothers and others rally to protect her.  Things really get even more interesting as that part of the story ramps up.  So does, the relationship that develops between Ford and Harley.

Everything comes to a good conclusion with a H.E.A. for our couple.

On a side note, I think I would like to read both Jack and Harrison's stories.

I really had mixed feelings on this one.  Some parts I really liked and others not so much. So I guess the best way to put it is "I liked it but..."

I did like both of the main characters although their first face to face meeting seemed a bit odd.  I liked the game element to the story.  The game that wasn't really a game but just the warmup for the real battle.  The science part got pretty interesting. Although a few times I felt a bit overloaded with some of the technology of some of the battle strategies.   There is also the insta heat when it comes to the sex between Darius and Lily.  While well written it also began to feel at times like it was overtaking the story.

So you see my dilemma? The emotions were good, the battles were good and so were some of the quickly seen friendships.  It comes to a good ending.  Well at least it looks like a good for now ending because the Epilogue shows that not all is ended in the battle with the evil Queen Raya.

When he’s given the assignment to take out one of the biggest threats the Seelie Court has ever known, he’s not expecting said threat to come in the form of a petite teenager who can barely afford to feed her cat let alone mastermind the destruction of an entire world.

He’s duty-bound to see this assignment through, until he realizes he’s been sent to kill his fated mate.

He must follow through with his assignment or risk the wrath of his father, but killing Crysta means losing the most precious gift a Fae warrior could ever hope to receive.

This was a really good, imaginative story.  The eBook cover is what caused me to slow down and read the book information.  It was just so beautiful, that I have to mention it.  The main characters were good with both being very determined "people".  The world-building was excellent and so was the dangers that they were faced with.

I liked how Crysta showed how difficult things had been for her until this time.  She never really fit in and was always just the weird one.  Even though the new information she was getting was so hard for her to believe, it also explained a few things too.  Things definitely just got weirder for her but then everything that Jareth knew just got upended too.

A surprising confrontation causes a H.E.A. for now ending.   But it looks like there are more books to this story if you want to see what else happens for and to this couple next.

Sorry to say but this one just didn't do anything for me. One of the reasons I think has to do with all of the swinging back and forth of the emotions.  One minute Razor and Ava were taking one step forward together and the next two steps back.  It seems like a hurt happens and then their signals get switched and they are on the outs. It happens quite a bit and seemed quite immature most of the time.  I just couldn't really get that much into the story.  I also felt like there were quite a few people in the story.  It had me rechecking who was who mainly in the team members.

The romance was there but I ended up wishing there was '' more" story".    It's a shame I didn't like it more because the potential was there.  Why?  Because there was at least one unusual element in the story that I haven't seen elsewhere.   It does end with an Epilogue which I always like to see.

** Book Review- The Bounty Hunter's Bride by Janis Jakes

Bounty hunter Luke Lancaster brings the best of both worlds to his work-the tracking skills of his Comanche father and the marksmanship he learned from his missionary grandfather.

When Luke is hired to track down a young man wanted for murder, he assumes it's a routine capture, but he's taken on a wild ride when he discovers that the accused is actually an innocent school teacher who knows too much for her own good.

Determined to uncover the truth, Luke sets out to keep himself and Billie alive while bringing the real outlaws to justice. As they race across Texas, Luke falls more in love with Billie. But, could a schoolteacher ever want a half-Comanche bounty hunter? Does Luke stand a chance or is he just her ride to freedom?  AMAZON LINK

4 STARS

What a good story this one ended up being. Luke was a really good main character and so was Billie.  Their first meeting was quite the surprise..for both of them.  It was not only surprising but had the potential to being dangerous as well.  It won't be the only dangers that they face.  In fact, it is just the beginning.

The story kept me involved all the way through.  Not only because of Billie and Luke but also because of their struggles to get justice.  Then there is also the secondary people in the story that includes Luke's father.  The emotions are there and the faith in God too.  Forgiveness is something that Luke is struggling with and it's easy to see why. HIS faith in God has been damaged but there are other people in the story who are still solid in their faith.   I'm hoping that others will read this story even it's not their normal fare.  The story was just that good.

It comes to a good ending with an equally satisfying Epilogue.

I read this book through Hoopla for free.

* Book Review- Taken Away - Part 2 by David Sloma

Bob, the security guard, purchases a bathmat that has a rather strange pattern on it: when he steps on it, a portal opens to another world filled with history, myth, and magic! Will Bob get home in time for his next shift? Will he get home at all? A SF/Fantasy short story series. Part 2 of 3.

AMAZON LINK

I found myself intrigued by this short story.  Not too bad considering I haven't even read the first book.  Of course like the book information states, this is only part 2 of a 3 part series.

The "magic" of the story was very creative and surprising.  So yes, I liked it even though it was as short as promised.  It did leave me wanting to read more though.  So I have to give points to the author for that.

Will love win over duty or can Devon prove he's better than James Bond and can succeed at both?   AMAZON LINK

3 Stars

This was an emotional story with good main characters. It's set in a sweet community of family, guests and for the most part a peaceful place.  Well, until a threat invades that peaceful Resort.

I will say that I had a bit of a problem with the pace of the story.  It was kind of slow at times and there was a rehashing of a couple of Iris's issues.

The story does get moving faster as things start hitting the fan with the bad guys.  But the story does have a good ending with a good Epilogue.

This book grabbed my attention right from the opening chapter and it never let go.  It was fast moving without being confusing.  I do want to mention that the eBook cover caught my eye and caused me to read the book info.  I'm glad that I did even though I didn't know that there was a supernatural element at work in the book.  I hope I didn't give away too much with that comment.

The story also pulled me into caring about both Roxie and Nelson pretty quickly.  We also got a quick look at the member of the Connelly Investigation team that had become a family of sorts for Roxie.

If you are looking for a story with plenty of unpredictable action and dangers, this story has it.  I never knew what was going to happen next. If you are looking for a story with a tender friendship leading to romance, this story also has it.   The story comes to a stunning end but some long awaited happiness too.

Exploring the Prophetic Interview with Shawn Bolz by Charity Kayembe: Recently my dad, Mark Virkler, was invited to join Shawn Bolz on his extremely popular Exploring the Prophetic podcast and they had a great time together. It was awesome to hear how God has used their ministries in such complementary and synergistic ways over the years, and you can get the whole scoop in my dad’s blog post here. Then it was my turn! It was an honor to be interviewed by Shawn and we had the best time getting to know each other, swapping stories of our favorite God encounters, and discovering some similarities on our journey in the sacred supernatural.

I liked this story and I think that the two main characters have a lot to do with that.  Especially Demeter who is both shy AND bold.  There is so much to her that most people don't even see.  She has long made it her way to be invisible like the wallflower she's been comfortable being. She has quite a few skills that  people never would have guessed at.   But Blake finds out about quite a few of her secrets.

Blake is in for the surprise of his life.  There was no way that he was prepared for Demeter.  His life had been full and comfortable to him as he lived his life as he pleased.  Being a rake was all he had wanted to be; no marriage, no children.  Ever.  Now his mother is acting weird. The woman who never had any time for him as a child, is now hovering.  Even his best friend, another rake is concerned about him.  Now his main concern is discovering what is going on about his Aunt Iris's will.  Her illegitimate son has shown up and taken over but things aren't adding up.

I just have to say that I adored Demeter's Aunt Sarah.  She did make things interesting and at times funny.

There is plenty of danger and humor and romance in the story.  It also has a good ending as well.

This story had it's moments.  It had charm and struggle with interesting main characters.  Although I liked it because of it's unusual plot I just wanted it to grab me more.

Yes, that was an unusual plot with Rowan being sent to kill Princess Alessa.  Now that isn't something you see everyday in a novel.

There is the classic struggle of him being a ruthless street urchin unworthy to even put a finger on a princess.  However,  although it was easy to see the emotional stress that it caused, it felt that it was revisited a bit to much for my taste.

There's plenty of danger and ruthlessness when it comes to the murder plot. Especially because Rowan wasn't' the only one being paid to kill the princess.

The story comes to a good end with an Epilogue following.

**^BOOK REVIEW- Sweep of the Blade (Innkeeper Chronicles, Book 4) by Ilona Andrews

Title details for Sweep of the Blade by Ilona Andrews - Available

Maud Demille is a daughter of Innkeepers—a special group who provide 'lodging' to other-planetary visitors—so she knows that a simple life isn't in the cards. But even Maud could never have anticipated what Fate would throw at her.
Once a wife to a powerful vampire knight, Maud and her young daughter, Helen, were exiled with him for his treachery to the desolate, savage planet of Karhari. Karhari killed her husband, and Maud—completely abandoned by his family—has spent over a year avenging his debts. Rescued by her sister Dina, she's sworn off all things vampire.
Except... In helping Dina save the world, she met Arland, the Marshal of House Krahr, one of the most powerful vampire houses. One thing led to another and he asked for her hand in marriage. She declined. Arland is not used to hearing the word 'no;' and try as she might, Maud can't just walk away from Arland. It doesn't help that being human is a lot harder for Maud than being a vampire.
To sort it all out, she accepts his invitation to visit his home planet. House Krahr is extremely influential and Maud knows that a woman—a human, with a very questionable past—who's turned down a proposal from its most beloved son won't get a warm reception. Maybe she's not sure about marrying Arland, but House Krahr isn't going to decide for her. Maud Demille has never run from a fight, and House Krahr will soon discover that there's a lot more to Maud than they're expecting.

For me this was another winner in this series.  I like how the beginning of each book is handled in such a way as you get a good foundation on what has happened before.  It's not an overwhelming rehashing of things but it's great for someone new to the series.  It's also a great refresher for those of us who have been reading the series.

Maud is one unusual person with some amazing talents.  Her most important one is that she is a survivor and will do anything to see that her daughter will also survive.  She is a fierce warrior but also so tender with her daughter, Helen who she calls, "my flower."  That made me smile every time she did that.  So did Helen, who was one fierce little girl who was half human and half vampire.  She's also a little girl NOT to be underestimated because she had been very well trained to defend herself and kill if she must.  She is a force to be reckoned with, now at 5 years old and promised to be even more as she gets older.

Maud knew going in that the vampire world that she was re-entering was going to be tough.  And it was and SO MUCH more.

There are plenty of emotions battles, plots and intrigues and Arland continues to be his charming but lethal self.   It takes Maud a long time to realize how much he loves her and he is happy for her to be herself no matter what.  He actually is in awe of her and has respected her for some time.

The world-building continues to be excellent, with every creature, their culture, clothing and customs so well described.  It's almost like a picture with words has been painted.

The whole story is edge-of-your- seat reading and epic battle is to be expected.    It explodes across the pages racing towards a really great ending.

This story although I can see it was well written just didn't grab me for some reason.  It probably should have because of good main characters and good supporting characters. The dangers were well written and there was also some humor in it as well.  One of my favorite things that made me smile was when Keir said to Merritt that she was a "a wee bully."   I also did like that Merritt's mother was unconventional and had told her when it came to something she wanted to "be fierce."

For me, I think there was too much whiskey information although you could tell the author did their homework.  Also a touch too much Scottish phrases.  But I guess that just might be me.  It does come to a good conclusion with a unconventional H.E.A.

I received  an advanced reader copy from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review

**^ Book Review- One Fell Sweep (Innkeeper Chronicles #3) by Ilona Andrews

Dina DeMille may run the nicest Bed and Breakfast in Red Deer, Texas, but she caters to a very particular kind of guest…the kind that no one on Earth is supposed to know about. Guests like a former intergalactic tyrant with an impressive bounty on her head, the Lord Marshal of a powerful vampire clan, and a displaced-and-superhot werewolf; so don't stand too close, or you may be collateral damage. But what passes for Dina's normal life is about to be thrown into chaos. First, she must rescue her long-distant older sister, Maud, who's been exiled with her family to a planet that functions as the most lawless penal colony since Botany Bay. Then she agrees to help a guest whose last chance at saving his civilization could bring death and disaster to all Dina holds dear. Now Gertrude Hunt is under siege by a clan of assassins. To keep her guests safe and to find her missing parents, Dina will risk everything, even if she has to pay the ultimate price. Though Sean may have something to say about that!

AMAZON LINK   5+ STARS

I like that if this is the very first book you've read in this series, you still could find your way pretty easily.  I liked how what went on in a previous book is recapped in a way that wasn't overwhelming.

It's amazing how the "guests" know the rules about quiet entry and using the back entrance but still break those instructions.  It makes for some hairy times for Dina.

Dina has such great creative ability when it comes to making a room personal for her new guests.  And speaking of new, her sister Maud and her daughter Helen add plenty of newness to the Inn.   Even though Maud has some of the Innkeeper abilities with the Inn too.  Helen, oh wow what can I say about her?  She may only be a 5 year old part vampire but I loved her !  She's cute, funny and fierce.  And her mother Maud will do whatever she has to when it comes to keeping her safe.

Some previous visitors show up again in this story. Arland the vampire from the Marshal from the House of Krahr  is one of those.  He is handsome, charming, funny and full out lethal. He also plays more of a part than even the previous stories.

Sean is back but he is WAY more than just a visitor and that friendship and "romance"  get more attention.  That was really good!

Office Marais also shows up (well, he never really left) and he's still eagle eyeing Dina and the Inn.  Boy, there are some big surprises coming up in that area.

Caldenia is still the permanent residence and once again she comes through for them when you least expect it.  She is also a hoot especially when she's in her observer mode.  She loves the drama and the excitement of danger.  She says it makes for good entertainment.

There are twists, turns, more and more dangers coming from expected and unexpected regions. It kept me all the way in and on the edge of my seat when it comes to this story.

I don't know how it happens but this series just keeps getting better and better.  Ok, so I'm on to the next one.

**^BOOK REVIEW- Sweep in Peace (Innkeeper Chronicles Book 2) by Ilona Andrews

 Innkeeper Chronicles #2

Dina Demille doesn’t run your typical Bed and Breakfast. Her inn defies laws of physics, her fluffy dog is secretly a monster, and the only paying guest is a former Galactic tyrant with a price on her head. But the inn needs guests to thrive, and guests have been scarce, so when an Arbitrator shows up at Dina's door and asks her to host a peace summit between three warring species, she jumps on the chance.

Unfortunately, for Dina, keeping the peace between Space Vampires, the Hope-Crushing Horde, and the devious Merchants of Baha-char is much easier said than done. On top of keeping her guests from murdering each other, she must find a chef, remodel the inn...and risk everything, even her life, to save the man she might fall in love with. But then it's all in the day's work for an Innkeeper…

5+ STARS

Yow, what a great book!  If you're looking for great world-building, great unpredictable scifi with great people with depth this is the one you will really enjoy.  I know I did.

Dina is one special person, who the more I read about her the more I liked her.  She has honor, power and tries to her best ability to honor the rules of being an Innkeeper.  However, she is also ingenious when it comes to problem solving even though at times (like this one) it's not exactly by the book.  She's an outside of the box thinker.   The connection between her and The Gertrude Hunt Inn was both wild and endearing. Beast, Dina's pet? continues to be a great addition as is Dina's permanent dangerous guest, Caldenia.

George is the Arbitrator from the Office of Arbitration who is a powerful entity to deal with.  He figures in a big way in the story as does Jack and Gastan who came with him.  But there is also plenty of other powerful "people" to deal with and they have their own agendas.

Orro, was a skilled chef but also so dramatic that he added fun too. So although there was plenty of danger there was also some humor too.  And not just with this chef.

I'm used to surprises in this series but a supremely feared Turan Adin turned out to be a shocker.  But then the ending had a few more shockers in store.  I loved it.   And I'm going to keep reading this series.

On a last note: The version I read also had some very beautiful illustrations too.   Similar to the beautiful eBook cover that I liked so much.
