BOOK REVIEW- CALCULATED RISK (A Bree and Tanner Thriller #1) by Janie Crouch

Sheriff’s deputy Tanner Dempsey is just doing his job when he stops a shoplifter trying to steal diapers and formula. But something about this frightened young woman makes him want to do more.
Bree Daniels is grateful for Tanner’s help, but there’s so much she can never tell him… The truth is dangerous to everyone she lets into her life—and could be lethal to Tanner. AMAZON 5+ STARS

Wow, what an intense story. I loved it!  The main characters were great.  The depth and complexity of Bree and her life was off the charts!  The emotions of her playing hide and seek was so well done that I could almost taste it.  But this child's game of hide and seek was not really a game because there was SO much at stake.  The other well developed part of the story is the emotional stunting that Bree is well aware that she suffers from.  She has no idea of what normal is because she's never lived it.  To give you an idea about that, she finds it hard to even let someone hug her.  She hadn't been hugged herself in years.  Running?  Yes, she knew how to do that.  She was an expert at that as well as being a super genius.
Tanner was a really good counter character for Bree.  He was an honorable man. Although he was persistent about finding out her "story"he reached a point where he knew he had to be patient, kind and gentle with her to earn her trust.   He likened her to a skittish horse who needed those qualities of kindness.  Kindness was something she didn't know what to do with.
Action, action, and all the action you could imagine keep this story moving.  Also trying to keep one step ahead of the organized dangers made you wonder how in the world these things could be stopped.  I also have to say that the idea of what the evil guys wanted to accomplish was kind of scary.  But I'm not saying any more about that.  Read it yourself and learn.
There is a surprise when it comes to someone closer than anyone imagined.  Someone who did NOT have her best interests at heart.  It was someone who I had just begun to have questions about in my own mind.  So when it is revealed I had no one to high-five with so I just did it mentally.
I also have to add that there were quite a few good people in the story as well.  The community that Bree tried to shoplift in had a lot of good people and I enjoyed the characters that were that part of the story.  But there weren't so many that it made it too hard to keep up with.
The ending has an awesome twist and had me almost clapping my hands.    And I loved how the loose ends were pulled together for the people in the story and not JUST Bree and Tanner.

BOOK REVIEW- Protector's Promise: An Omega Secor Novella by Janie Crouch

Book Cover

Seducing Najita wasn't part of Aidan's mission fifteen months ago, but it got him the info he needed. He left her behind with no idea of the price she would pay.
Now he's back to finish the op. To stop a cartel's reign of terror.
And to try to right a wrong that changed everything.

This was a good story with fast action and Najita in particular pulled me into the story quickly.   And she was exactly what Aiden said she was...one smart woman.   She's endured a lot even though Aiden hadn't known it.  But even so, he never forgot her.
I really liked the part where he admitted he would never leave her behind ever again.
When Aiden shows up for her, he really does show up.  He's all in especially when he finds out there is something else that he didn't know.
I liked that Najita did have a least one woman on the ground pulling for her and helping her as she can.  She becomes like an adopted mother to her.
Good wins over evil in this one and that is always something that I enjoy.

BOOK REVIEW- The Marriage Pact by Winter Renshaw

I was sixteen when I vowed I would never marry him.

We shook on it. Pinky swore. Even put it in writing and all but signed our names in blood.

It was the one and only thing we ever agreed on.

To the world, he’s Prince Ian, Duke of Montcroix, second in line to the Chamont throne. Panty-melting accent. Royal charm. Hypnotic presence. Blindingly gorgeous. Laundry list of women all over the world who would give their first born for the chance to marry him. Most eligible bachelor in the free world …

But to me, he’s nothing more than the son of my father’s best friend—the pesky blue-eyed boy who made it his mission to annoy the ever-loving hell out of me summer after summer as our families vacationed together, our parents oblivious to our mutual disdain as they joked about our “betrothal.”

He was also my first kiss.

And my first taste of heartbreak so cataclysmic it almost broke me.

I meant it with every fiber of my soul when I swore I’d never marry him.

But on the eve of my 24th birthday, His Royal Highness has the audacity to show up at my door after years of silence and make a demand that will forever change the trajectory of our lives: “We have to break our pact.”   AMAZON 4 STARS

What a great setup. For the opening of the book, that is.  The two main characters had quite the history.  And not all of it good.
When HRH showed back up, even when he laid out his "request" I still felt like he was holding some things back.  Turns out he was but you will just have to read the book and find out just like I did.  Still it kept things interesting.
I liked Emelie and the fact that she wasn't so easy to maneuver as most women.    She's as real as you can get and that made Julian wince a time or two.  But, hey he also deserved it.  He was used to women melting at his feet.  Not happening here.
The story has plenty of attractions to each other and misunderstandings too.  For both of them trust is a delicate commodity.  There were also some good secondary people and situations in the story as well.
The ending of the story comes with several HUGE twists that I didn't see coming at all!!

What a good surprise after the story is over to find the who's-who of people that the author would cast as her dream choices for a movie.   That was fun!

BOOK REVIEW- The Billionaire Prince’s Daughter Leslie North

It was only supposed to be a one-night stand. A bit of glitz, glamour, and champagne with one of the world’s most eligible bachelors. What single woman—and Amy Branch was certainly single—could possibly resist Artur, Prince of Stolvenia, who made a living out of being charming? He sure charmed her, all right. Charmed her right into a night of passion that resulted in a little present neither of them were expecting.

Now, all Amy has to do is find a way to tell Artur that he’s about to become a daddy. Easier said than done, but after months of trying to get word to him, she finally gets her chance. The playboy needs to be reformed to make the royal family more palatable to a country on the verge of voting to abolish the monarchy. That means Artur’s wild ways will have to end—with the help of a PR expert. A PR expert who just happens to be carrying the prince’s baby. What could possibly go wrong?

Artur has begrudgingly agreed to have his image molded, but to his happy surprise the PR wrangler is the same sizzling hot woman he’d shared an intense night of passion with a few months back. He’s happy to pick up where they left off—until she turns to the side, exposing a noticeable baby bump. But Amy has no intention of using the baby to net herself a princely groom. Indeed, she seems intent on throwing Artur at every eligible woman in Stolvenia except for herself. Problem is, the only woman Artur realizes he wants to be with is Amy. Even more unfortunate, he has the audacity to fall in love with her. AMAZON 4 STARS

This was a charming, enjoyable story.  Even though the opening chapter has the heat level go up.  Why?  Because it starts out with their "one-night stand."
I like both of the main characters.  Even though Artur's family in included in the story, their part wasn't deep.  Just enough to let you get the feel of their support for each other.  So, I guess I'm saying some of that is a bit shallow but I did find it a fast, fun story.  I also liked Amy's boss and best friend Petra.  Her part was a bit deeper because she did show up and support Amy.  She also wasn't afraid to ask Amy the hard questions.
Artur has been seen as the Party Prince and that's it.   And of course that is why they need a PR person to spin his image.  The fact is that he is good with people and does like to entertain.  Amy finds a way to make that a benefit for the kingdom.
Of course you know that the M.C.'s have some "stuff" to work through.
I liked how the book ended making it a good summer read.

BOOK REVIEW- Untamed (Eternal Brethren Military Romantic Suspense Book 4) Shirleen Davies

She never should’ve agreed to a girls’ night out.

Untamed, Book Four, Eternal Brethren Military Romantic Suspense Series
Quinn “Wrangler” McCord is brash and impatient, known to push buttons, skirt tradition, and be counted on to stir things up. As the brother of the undercover motorcycle club’s president, and one of the youngest members, he never pushes enough to damage his career as a Navy SEAL. Underneath the false front, all isn’t jovial. Memories of a past mistake, one he can never rectify, haunt him, pushing him to take chances. Whether it’s a mission or a new woman, he’s always up for a challenge. Anything to help forget what he left behind.
Rebecca North clawed her way out of a devastating breakup to become a respected paralegal.
She’s come a long way from the lost young woman who had few choices and little money, becoming confident, independent…and a mother. Her new job in Liberty Lake provides a great income and brings her closer to home and her mother. It never occurs to Becca her safe haven will be the place where her past and present collide.

A short flirtation at the club’s bar turns into an explosive reunion. Recovering quickly, he jumps at the chance to heal his mistakes. She can’t turn him down fast enough, wanting nothing to do with the cocky motorcycle club member. A man who’ll never be allowed back into her life.

Intentions, though, are fragile. When Becca is threatened by the very men the Eternal Brethren are tasked to neutralize, Wrangler wastes no time spiriting her away. Protecting people from danger is something he’s trained to do. Overcoming the pain he’d caused isn’t. Especially when the secret she never intends to divulge stands before him, his bright, searching eyes the same as his.

Will a common cause be the thread which holds them together? Or will past mistakes and a secret life he can’t share be too much for either to overcome?

Untamed is the fourth book in the Eternal Brethren Military Romantic Suspense Series by best seller Shirleen Davies. It is a stand-alone, full-length novel with no cliffhanger and a guaranteed HEA.

PLEASE NOTE: This series contains strong language common within the military. It is also a steamy romance with open door love scenes.  AMAZON 5 STARS

This series by this author has quickly become one of my favorites. I've liked other books that she has written but this series rocks as far as I am concerned! The action, the emotions and the sense of community between the men and now some of the women rocks. I also like the fact that they do their dangerous missions under the cover of being a motorcycle gang.  Often they have to go in without any one knowing who it was that was there. There is plenty of action going on and not just for the team missions either!  The story just keeps moving which I liked.

Wow, Quinn/Wrangler had been one selfish guy ten years ago.  Even I had a hard time liking that about him. Yes, I know he was young at the time.  But man, leaving without any word after they were together for 3 years.  And then staying that way on purpose?  Cruel, just cruel. But everything isn't lost when it comes to Wrangler.  He's grown up some although this news about his son is going to require him to grow up a bit more personally.
It leaves quite a bit of bitterness for Rebecca to deal with while raising her son alone.  Of course, there was one choice she could have made that might have helped some.  But her pride put a huge roadblock up to that idea.  There is plenty of anger and finger pointing between the two main characters.  While both really wanting what is best for Jamie.  And Wrangler is trying to get to know his son.  That is so well done.  That churns up a lot of emotion for all of them.   I will give Rebecca points for never lying to her son though.  She might have dragged her feet when she has the opportunity to tell Wrangler about his son but when the worst time happens she faces it!
The danger to Rebecca and Jamie was also well done too.  And also a surprise to me.
There is a good ending with an Epilogue and a lead in to another team member's story.   There is a good lead in to Tracker and his angry ex-love interest named Dr. Julia Stanifer.  And if you read this story you get a pretty good insight into just why she is so angry.

BOOK REVIEW- Deadlock (Hacker World Book 1) by Cherrie Lynn

BOOK REVIEW- Jackson : Eternity Springs: The McBrides of Texas by Emily March

Sometimes it takes a new beginning
Caroline Carruthers married young to a much-older man. Now that he’s gone, she’s lost…until she dares to chase a dream all on her own. Moving to Redemption, Texas, is chapter one in Caroline’s new life story. Opening a bookstore is the next. Finding love is the last thing on her mind as she settles into this new place called home. But when she meets a handsome, soulful man who’s also starting over, all bets are off.
to reach a happily-ever-after
Jackson McBride came to Redemption looking only to find himself, not someone to love. Ever since his marriage ended, he’s been bitter. Sure, he used to believe in love—he even has the old song lyrics to prove it—but the Jackson of today is all business. That is, until a beautiful young widow who’s moved to town inspires a change of heart. Could it be that the myth of Redemption’s healing magic is true…and Jackson and Caroline can find a second chance at a happy ending after all?
 AMAZON 3 STARS

Both main characters were good ones.  People that you begin to care for and want a good outcome for.  It was interesting that the very first time Caroline and Jackson met, she was married.  Now that was something I wasn't expecting.   Coming to Redemption does stir the seemingly dead music in Jackson's soul and it seems like Caroline has also stirred that up as well.  I guess you could say from the very beginning she was like his muse.
There is really good world building and very descriptive painting of Redemption.  For me, the only problem was that at times it felt like a bit too much history and description.  It began to feel like a travel log at times.  It slowed the story down for me.  I was interested in more things happening with the people especially the main characters.
Jackson is working with two other family members.  Boone and Tucker are his cousins and they are all in when it comes to make this new venture succeed.   Celeste Blessing was another wonderful character who pulls a lot of threads together.  She's 70 years old plus.  She helped different people meet who otherwise might not have.  She's considered kind and extremely wise by most people.  She also almost scares people with some of the accurate wisdom's that come out of her mouth for the future that people will need.  If only Angelica would listen to some of that wisdom. Angelica is Celeste's cousin and she isn't mean but she is a bit flaky.  And the two of them are often butting heads especially when it comes to running the new inn.
Maisy Baldwin is another person who is secondary to the story.  Caroline and Maisy are developing a new friendship though.
If you really want to see a unusual woman you will get to see that in Jackson's ex-wife Sharon. She is also known as the singing sensation  Coco.
There is a twist or two towards the end of the book with a good Epilogue. All in all, I have to say that the book was an okay read, with the potential to be more.  A little less about their surroundings and a more action with the actual characters of the story.  I missed the depth that it could have had.

BOOK REVIEW- More Than A Rogue The Crawfords, Book 2 by Sophie Barnes

Description

All she wanted was a kiss…
What she got, was fiery passion…

What she doesn't expect, is for Griffin Crawford, the handsomest man in the world, to do the honors. Or for all her female relations to discover her in his embrace. Naturally, marriage is instantly mentioned, but since Emily knows this is not what Griffin wants, she tries to escape him, her family and the ensuing scandal.
When Emily flees the Camberly ball in the wake of their kiss, Griffin goes in pursuit. He will not allow his sister-in-law's determined friend to risk her safety for any reason. And risk it she will if she means to return to her countryside home by herself. But the longer he remains in her company, the more he is tempted to kiss her again. If only he could risk falling in love and remain in England forever.  AMAZON 3 STARS

A charming story with interesting main characters. They find that they have at least one thing in common.  They were both running from the mold that their parents meant for them to fit in.
Griffin was touchy about the scar that was on his face.  There is a sad story to go with the how he got the scar.  But he is surprised when Emily tells him that she doesn't think it detracts from his handsomeness.  Griffin finds her bold honesty refreshing if not at times somewhat startling.  He observes that she does and says the most unexpected things!  They make a pact at one point that during the time they are spending together that they will speak with total honesty to each other.
Both Emily and Griffin are in major denial when it comes to their attraction to each other.  Emily is an honorable woman who does NOT want to trick a man into marriage.   She also has to deal with her clueless but manipulative mother whose whole goal is to get her married. And also move on and get Emily's sister in an advantageous marriage as well.   She seems willing to get it done by hook or by crook.
Both M.C's are fighting that push to get them married.  Well, until about 40% on my kindle when Griffin begins to plan to secretly court Emily anyway. Well, at that point it was more like he was intrigued by her and thought to seduce her.   Things don't go exactly as planned.  Feelings start getting in the way.
There aren't a lot of surprises until things start heading to the end of the book.  Then one unpleasant truth comes out and another unexpected engagement comes out.  Now that engagement was a surprise because there wasn't even a glimpse of them about to become a couple.

Included is a look into Book #1 "No Ordinary Duke".  This is the story about Caleb who is Griffin's brother and was in this book also.  It is  Caleb and Mary's story.

BOOK REVIEW- Rogue Most Wanted by Janna MacGregor *

Description

Wanted: an engagement of convenience. Found: A noble suitor.
Raised on a remote Scottish estate by her adoring grandfather, Lady Theodora Worth has inherited an earldom as well as the land itself. But when an upstart duke challenges her claim to the title and the Ladykyrk estate, Thea is suddenly in need of a husband—in name, at least. An elderly neighbor with a thoroughly modern sensibility and a dashing great-nephew just might be the answer to Thea’s prayers. Except she has no intention of marrying the first man she meets. That would be utterly ridiculous.
It just can’t be him. . .
Lord William Cavensham is entirely too devoted to his family’s estate—ever since he was jilted as a lad--to wed, but he agrees to meet the woman his aunt has taken under her wing—and introduce her to possible suitors. But after just one meeting with beautiful, spirited Thea, Will is determined to help her reclaim her title. And even moreso, he can’t stop thinking that perhaps marriage to this bold, passionate woman may be the one thing he’s been missing all along?  AMAZON  3 STARS

Interesting main characters in unusual situations.  William and Theodora were total strangers.  They are of course wary of each other and then they go from total strangers to careful friends to both slowly thinking they just might want more.  It was a friendship that became stronger and stronger as time went on.

Thea had missed so much of life as she lived isolated with her grandfather on his estate.  But there were good reasons for it.  But it also leaves her off balance as she quickly has to learn what most people of the ton grew up knowing.  But she loved her grandfather and will do whatever she has to do to save her beloved Ladykyrk.

William (Will) at one point observes that the women in his family were strong and steadfast.  Always ready to bear the weight of keeping the family structure sound.    One of those is his great-aunt Stella who has always been more like a grandmother to him.  They have a strong, affectionate relationship. He is her favorite and he adores her.  Stella and her closest friend Edith are fun characters who are 100% behind helping Theodora or Thea as she is also called.  Thea saw them as unruly (in the best possible ways) and also everything delightful at the same time.  The rest of Will's family were something that I did enjoy.  They were a tight, loving group.

The gossip rag has a really cruel reporter called, " The Midnight Cryer"  who keeps the waters stirred with lies and innuendo.  It also sells papers, which of course is the main purpose. Each chapter of this book opens with a new cruel lie. Even the most innocent incident gets a cruel twist.  Makes you wonder how the reporter is getting information and who it is and if there is any way to shut the Cryer down.

The one thing that I didn't care for as much was all the rules and regulations that Thea had to l learn.  Some of it was a bit boring to me and I felt it dragged the story at times.  Of course, the author did show how tiresome it was for Thea and the reader did get a chance to feel that.
There is a hard fought for H.E.A. and a good Epilogue.

BOOK REVIEW- Alpha's Promise (Dark Protectors Book 10) by Rebecca Zanetti

Description

To hell and back . . .
Though he has vampire, demon, and Viking blood rushing through his veins, Ivar Kjeidsen’s soul-crushing trip to hell broke him in ways he can barely fathom.  One vow keeps the deadly immortal standing: To rescue the vampire brother who had sacrificed freedom for him.  To do that, Ivar needs the help of a brilliant physicist with wary brown eyes, fierce brilliance, and skin that's way too soft.

Dr. Promise Williams understands the underpinnings of the universe but has never figured out the human beings inhabiting it.   Her function is to think—and not feel—until she’s touched by a vampire who’s nowhere near human. The primal hunger in his eyes awakens feelings in her that defy calculation. As she shows him the way to step between worlds, he brands her with a pleasure that could last more than a lifetime . . .AMAZON  4 STARS

This book has quite the interesting start.  It's designed to grab your attention.  And for me, it worked!
Before I get more into the people in this story I just need to mention something. Although a lot of the science and math ideas escaped me, there still was some great world-building.  Especially what Ivar called, " Hell Worlds"  I might not understand the science of it but the author still did a great job of showing just how bad some of those were.  Showed how they earned that title.
Promise was all brain for most of her life.  It seemed like that's all her parents demanded from her.  Any imagination or even fun seemed to be ground right out of her by them.  Emotion was NOT a priority in their life and didn't seem to see the need for it in hers.  It didn't take long for Ivar to see what a lonely little girl she had been.  I liked how Ivar saw more than just her very intelligent brain. Oh, he liked how smart she was and got a big kick out of watching her attack a problem.  But he also brought out the passion in her, helped her get in touch with her feelings and even gave her a nickname.  Towards the end of the book she began to realized that he had taught her that emotions and intelligence could make her smarter and stronger.
It's pretty clear that Ivar has suffered some horrific things.  But he also wants to honor his vow to Quade to rescue him from that Hell World.  Even if he has to take his place again.
Ivar is quite the fighting machine but also proves to be quite the love machine when it comes to Promise.  So, yes there will be quite a few HOT times between the two of them.  Promise thinks that a logical decision would be to mate with Ivar.  She likes him, the sex rocks her world.  She also wants forever to work on all the things that her mind wants to solve.  Ivar knows she only thinks she knows what that would be like being his mate.
They have plenty of time to think about it as there is a lot of dangers, and actions and problems going on.
Some pretty good supporting people in the story as well.  Ivar has a lot of good people in his corner.  He also has more than a couple of villains that want him dead too.
Just to let you know, not all of the problems are solved in this book but they are making headway!

There is a quick look into another book by Rebecca Zanetti.  It's a Deep Ops novel called, "FALLEN."

BOOK REVIEW- Tame the Wild Wind by Rosanne Bittner

Revenge drives a Sioux warrior into a storm of danger and desire in this historical western romance from the bestselling author of Sweet Mountain Magic.

When Gabe Beaumont was forced to choose between the Sioux tribe of his mother and the white family of his father, his choice ended up costing him everything. Settlers murdered his Indian wife and child, and now revenge is all he lives for.

Riding westward with a renegade Sioux band, he becomes Tall Bear, a warrior with a wounded soul—until a raid on a Wyoming stagecoach station brings him face-to-face with a feisty, red-haired beauty who could change his life . . .

Now two independent spirits will move heaven and earth to be with each other—and to fight for love against the shadows and the danger that lurks in Gabe’s wild heart of the frontier.
 AMAZON 5 STARS

Great main characters, each with painful histories.  As tough as Gabe's life has been it sure seems that Faith almost has a times a tougher one.  More than one man has deeply disappointed her.  And her charming first husband Johnny was someone that she loved but he was full of empty promises and wild dreams.    Things did not end up well for Johnny and it was just a matter of how and well as far as I could see.
There are good secondary people in the story.  People who were there for Faith.  Buck was one of them who consistently showed up when she needed help.  I should mention here that so did Tall Bear/Gabe.  Faith prayed for help and often Tall Bear showed up. A woman in the story who became important to Faith was named Hilda and they became really close.  She taught Faith so much and became like her second mother.
There are plenty of "haters" out there when it comes to Gabe and his half Indian heritage.
Of course Faith also was not the average woman of her time.  She had spunk, determination and a desire to succeed.  The very things that her religious father tried to stamp out of her are the things that are helping her to survive.  It also attracts people to her as well.  Some good and some not so good. Someone else who was a surprise was Bret Flowers and she has more good in her than people originally would think.   A lot of people didn't want to have anything to do with her at first.
The not so good people that I mentioned caused some pretty severe problems against Gabe and Faith but it's really good how it all gets overcome at the end.   I felt like this was a really well written story about two people with wild hearts, love and grit.  The story also ends giving us a good look a few years later showing us even more of how things ended and for some began again.  It might not have been marked Epilogue but it was.

BOOK REVIEW- Secret Betrayal by C. B. Clark

Description

Librarian Marissa Reynolds has spent years distancing herself from her crime kingpin uncle. When she awakens in an unfamiliar hotel room with blood on her hands and no memory of how she got there, the past returns with a vengeance, and her life spirals into a nightmare. Straight-laced Assistant District attorney Scott Bannister has spent his life seeking justice for the senseless shooting deaths of his parents. When he realizes Marissa is the niece of his prime suspect, he crosses a line, guaranteed to jeopardize both his life and his beloved career. He'll do anything to destroy her uncle. She fears he's using her to achieve his goal. As the body count mounts, and their lives are threatened, they must put aside their distrust and work together to find the devious killer. Will they be able to forgive and find true love?   AMAZON 5 STARS

I really ended up liking this story a lot.  It had really good main characters with complex histories that made for a good story.   I liked that Scott wasn't the typical muscle bound, hero expert.  Oh, he was smart but he was also nerdy smart too.  Everything about that made him more realistic.  That's not to say that he didn't stand up terrified against some pretty tough physical threats. It just made him all the more likable.  Marissa, what a good woman caught up into the maneuvers of the dangers from her uncle's crime world.
Somebody is definitely out to get them and has been diabolically clever.  There has been a lot of advance evil work to try to completely frame them both.   It seems like that person is so many steps ahead of them.  Forget about the premise of being innocent before proven guilty.  Because there is a whole lot of evidence that screams that they are guilty.   They are having the hardest time trying to get ahead of it all.  Add to that the fact that they are being chased by someone who is doing their best to try to kill them.   You can imagine how much action it causes in this book and you would be right.  There is lots!
Romance you ask if there is any?  That would be a yes.  Although Scott keeps forgetting who Marissa's uncle is.  Then when he does it causes him to pull back.  So there will be a fair amount of pulling together and pushing back in the story.  There does end up being a couple of sex scenes for the two of them without it being over-the -top detailed which I liked.
I began to get suspicious about one particular person being a villain in the piece.  And the person does get outed in the explosive ending of the book.  BUT.... so does one totally unexpected person as well.  I liked that the author was able to surprise me so well.  I never suspected it.
The story all comes together with many mysteries solved and a H.E.A. for the M.C.'s.  A good ending over all.

BOOK REVIEW- A Valiant Prince (The Poisoned Pawn Duet Part II ) by SE Rose

Description

Some princes are born into royalty. And some princes are made into royalty. Logan Winters just discovered that he’s a prince, a prince that someone wants dead. When Princess Susanna came waltzing into his world, she took his breath away with her beauty and charm and also with the truth about his life. Now they are racing against time to find out who wants to kill him. Will they be able to stop a killer? Or will their discovery bring down not one throne but two?  AMAZON

Explosive beginning. I liked that .  But I did find it a bit overwhelming at first because of all of the people thrown at me in the beginning.
The story is told mainly from Logan's point of view for those who would like to know. I found this book hard to settle on a rating because it caused mixed feelings about for me.

I liked both of the main characters and how there are SO many secrets.  Not only are there a lot of secrets there is also a LOT of sexual scenes as well.  I wish the author had dialed that back a bit.
The family relationships were good and even some of the relationships with the bodyguards added to the story.
Who can you trust becomes a major issue very early on and with good reason.
The story felt like it slowed down for a while but then it does start back up and begins to really take off.  When I say it took off, I mean it had some really good twists coming our way.  Mysteries are exposed, followed by a H.E.A. and a welcome Epilogue.

BOOK REVIEW- "The Wolf Duke" (Valor of Vinehill #2) by K.J. Jackson

Book Cover

Note: The novels in the Valor of Vinehill series by K.J. Jackson are each stand-alone stories and can be read individually in any order. These historical romances are set in the Regency and Victorian eras, and do not shy away from scenes with steamy heat, occasional naughty language, and moments that might possibly make you squirm.

A lady set on vengeance. A cold duke with secrets of his own. Wills clash when she falls into his life and sparks fly. Can they learn to trust each other before it’s too late?

A lady set on vengeance.
Fiery death took her brother and with him, her chance for a normal life with a well-suited match. Now Lady Sloane Ruddington is determined to make the man responsible for the fire pay for his sins—Reiner Doran, a cold-hearted duke with nothing more than acquiring land and filling his coffers in his soul.

A cold duke with secrets of his own.
When the Duke of Wolfbridge stumbles upon a woman unconscious on his lands, Reiner has little choice but to hold her captive in his household. He has enemies afoot and she could very well be another spy sent to destroy him. The last thing he should do is trust her. But when the beguiling Scottish beauty awakens with no memory of why she is at Wolfbridge, he has to keep her close—for both of their sakes.

Can a fiery lass melt a frigid heart?
Reiner soon discovers her enthusiasm for life is exactly what is missing in his household—for his niece—and him. As an undeniable fire between them sparks to life, there becomes only one thing that can tear them apart—her memories. Can they learn to trust each other before it is too late?
AMAZON 4 STARS

Sloane and Reiner were really good, complex characters.   I liked the depth that they had.  Reiner's niece Vicky also added to the story and I enjoyed watching her interactions with Sloane.    Sloane brought a joy into Vicky's life that had been sorely missing.

The emotions and the dangers were well shown.  Even the despair of Sloane's cousin Torrie who wished for death after the savage burns she suffered.   She had sunk into pain, and bitterness with a desire for revenge on those who had caused it. She even turned her bitterness onto Sloane for saving her.  Even though Sloane had also suffered a horrendous burning of her left arm.
Things were NOT exactly as Sloane had thought the facts were. There were plots being formed by more than one person.  Misinformation was also being sent out to people.  Mistrust between Sloane and Reiner shifted back and forth.  They would just begin to possibly trust and then wham! another issue came up to put pressure on that trust.
Something I really enjoyed was the fact that Sloane had grown up with a pretty adventurous childhood.  Part of that adventurousness was the pure joy of climbing.  Climbing up strong vines was something she excelled at as a child.  She did this with other children in her family often causing heart palpitations to nannies and others when discovered.  But it also plays a big part in the beginning of this story and how the main characters met.
I liked how the dangers played out as well as the on again off again romance.  It all comes together in a very satisfying way along with a GREAT Epilogue.

BOOK REVIEW- Steel Resolve by B.J. Daniels

BOOK REVIEW- The Matchmaker's Match (Man's Best Friend Book #3 ) by Nicole Flockton

Description

Could the best man be her best option?
The last person Meredith Turner expects to see at her best friend’s wedding rehearsal dinner is the guy she had a one night stand with. What’s worse, Lincoln Forrest is the best man and as maid of honor, her partner. To add insult to injury, she has to leave the rehearsal dinner early, and Lincoln is the one to help her with a deeply personal problem. The aftermath of that night brings big changes for them both.
Lincoln Forrest has helped his best friend meet the woman of his dreams, but recently he’s made a series of bad decisions, the biggest being leaving his career with the Army. Now the former K-9 handler is looking for a new career and trying to get his life back on track. Helping Meredith in her time of need connects her to him more than he expected. On a mission to right the wrong he created, Linc will do whatever is needed. But when the attraction that first drew them together flares to life again, will the obstacles between them be too much to overcome? Or has the matchmaker met his match?  AMAZON 3 STARS

Good main characters and supporting friends, Ethan and Isabella.  Ethan is Lincoln's best friend and Isabella is Meredith's.  I found out later that Ethan and Isabella have their own story in Book 1 called "Blind Date Bet".  It also explains a bit more about the title for this book.
Two strangers meeting, being attracted and having a one-night stand has been written before.  Also seeing each other again unexpectedly was explained in the information about the book.   But then a major twist happens that I didn't see coming and you don't often see in a book.   I liked those unexpected moments.
I liked both Meredith and Linc and wanted to see them get together for more than just a good time.  Linc was a good guy, a solid kind of person who was there for Meredith even when things got tough.    Meredith had been pushed aside so many times in her life that she had to struggle to find happiness.  She was tired of being an after thought in people's lives.   She wasn't that though in Isabella's life.   And Isabella also helps pull her through some tough stuff when she needs help. Then the story kind of slowed down.  Meredith in particular re-hashed some things over and over.  That was done a bit longer than I would have liked.
Something else that I want to mention that I liked was the different dogs introduced into the story.
Towards the end of the book Meredith has her "moment of stupidity" that almost ends them.
But a H.E.A.  does happen for Meredith and Linc followed by a satisfying Epilogue.

BOOK REVIEW- Dirty Irish (Murphy Brothers Book 3) by Magan Vernon

Description

My life has revolved around the two things I've always loved: whiskey and rugby. Now the marriage clause in my Da's will has me putting both on the back burner if I want to save the Murphy's Pub empire and find a wife.
As the last brother to get married, I need a little help, and that's where my sister-in-law's American best friend, Leah, comes into the picture. She could use a little Irish luck after the deceitful things her ex did to her that brought her to Ireland. With her take-no-shite-attitude, she's just the type of girl to help me find a wife.
That is, if I can remember she’s the matchmaker and not the match.  AMAZON  3 STARS

Interesting main characters.  Main characters that are kind of living in the land of denial when it comes to their attraction to each other.  It does cause some funny moments as they get to know each other.  She has that assistant job to do for Sean but no matter how much they resist it they begin to become friends. It becomes more than just a employee and employer.  They really do get along pretty well.  Sean finds Leah's sass pretty funny too.
Fallon is Leah's best friend who helps draw her into this whole thing.  But all she did in the beginning was get her to the Irish pub to be a bartender.  Fallon knew that Leah needed a soft place to land after what she had been through.  Fallon is also in love with and married to Connor and the other brother Jack is getting married soon too.   So 2 down one to go.
It was kind of fun seeing the differences in language and culture between the two main characters.  Also fun was Sean teaching Leah about his beloved sport of rugby.

I did feel like a certain phrase was a bit overused.  "Every hair on the back of their neck stood up" could have been dialed back a bit.   I did like the fact that there were a couple of surprises in store for Sean and Leah but also there was an interesting solution to some things that were challenging them.  I liked the solutions really well and the Epilogue was good too.

 AMAZON  5 STARS
Good main characters with a painful history that still hurts them all these years after.
Mackenzie or Macki as Josh calls her is a multi-level successful, fierce woman.  She is also someone who does NOT like being told what to do.  Her chauffeur Ed mentioned that she got back up every time life knocked her down. Sometimes she took unusual routes to stand the pain but she kept her eye on the horizon. Always moving forward.  That statement was proven time and again.
Josh is a very skilled man as well but because of his main focus of protection without feelings he also comes across as a jerk quite often.
Detective Cummings is even more of a jerk as well as his Lt. Grey. Both were pushy and overbearing.  Cummings was always invading her space.  Even made me want to hit him. I really didn't understand why they thought they had the right to be all up in her business.  And I just wasn't sure if that was all it was it was or if one or the other was a criminal.  Maybe even both.  It's going to take some time to figure out which side of the law that they really fall on.
I liked that Josh was such a complex man and that Macki observed that he had two different personas.  That when he strapped on his guns he switched from being the Josh she knew to going into his protection mode personality, Agent Slater.  Or should that be lack of personality in order to be more accurate.
Team Shades was an interesting mention of people who no matter where they were in the world if a call went out for help, they all responded if they could.
There was plenty of interesting characters on both sides.  Good guys and bad guys included. It was nice that it didn't make the story hard to follow though.
This story was full of emotion and crazy action.  Crazy in a good way for the reader. The romance part was pretty good too.
Huge twists and surprises head towards a dramatic finish.  A Epilogue is included which I always enjoy. I ended up totally loving this story and look forward to more in the series.  This was one FULL story.

BOOK REVIEW- The Naked Duke (Naked Nobility Book 1) by Sally MacKenzie

 The Surprise Of Her Life

Sophisticated. Scandalous. In fact, Miss Sarah Hamilton, a proper Philadelphian, finds London society altogether shocking. How can it be that she has awakened from her innocent slumber to find herself in bed next to a handsome--and exceedingly naked--man? The laughing onlookers standing in the doorway are no help whatsoever and surely this amorous lunatic cannot be a duke, as he claims. She is compromised--though she most certainly will not marry him!

The Sweetest Moment Of His

James, the Duke of Alford, is enchanted by his unexpected bedmate--and not at all afraid of her pink-cheeked fury. True, the circumstances and place of their meeting are most unusual, but the spirited American who's pummeling him with a pillow is an incomparable beauty. If Sarah will only listen to his perfectly reasonable explanation, James is sure that he can capture her heart. . .forever.
AMAZON   4 STARS

This book was really a surprise and a good one for the most part.  I have to admit that the title alone made me stop and take another look at the book information.
I enjoyed this book so much but I think it was mainly because of the main characters.  They were so funny together when Sarah wasn't trying to run away from him or explain that they just wouldn't work as husband and wife.  And their first meeting was a comedy of errors.
I will say that it wasn't all fun and games though because the dangers were real and the villain was beyond vile.  Right here is the place where I mention that there is at least one attempted rape.  I say that just in case this is a trigger for anyone.  One particular scene towards the end of the book was kind rough to read.
There are some good secondary people in the story that includes, the friends of James.  Charles and Robbie have know James for a long time and are really good friends. I see that Charles gets his own story in" The  Naked Marquis (Naked Nobility Book 2)".  I'd like to read that one too.
Lady Amanda is part of James household and gives spunky but often unwelcome comments.  Makes for some interesting times.
The rumors about James and his nickname that his cousin the vile villain Richard put out really cause a lot of problems.  Outrageous stories about his being called, The Monk, cause plenty of pain for Sarah and also James.
I also did find it odd that after what Sarah went through the end of the book that she recovered enough to be amorous towards James.  Seems unlikely.
Plenty of action and murder attempts go on in this story until things get sorted out and James and Sarah get their H.E.A.

BOOK REVIEW- Hacker Exposed: White Hat Security Series, Book 1 (Kindle Edition) by Linzi Baxter

35110747
 Alex. I knew one thing…

Someone had stolen from me.

Could the gorgeous blonde I hadn’t seen in years be the answer?

One look from her, and she had me hook, line, and sinker. So when danger was knocking at her door, I knew I would do anything to save her.

Bridget. My identity was no longer a secret.

I had to decide, help Alex or go on the run. But one look into Alex’s piercing blue eyes, and I knew I would risk everything to help him.

Even if it meant stirring up the turmoil of my past

Will Alex and I find out who stole the money before it’s too late?  AMAZON 4 STARS

I had mixed feelings on this one.  While I liked the main characters, there was also some swearing, pretty fast moving into sex, and a pretty good amount of secondary characters.  While it wasn't really that hard for me to  keep up all the people, it also gave you an idea of what might some of the following books in the series.   A  BSDM club is mentioned as is the homosexuality between two people.  Now if you can get past all of that there is a pretty decent story.  Threats coming from a unexpected area aimed at Bridget with her murder being the goal after they get what they want from her.   I have to say a couple of times she did a few stupid things that had me shaking my head.
One thing I really liked was that the stereotypical  idea of great hackers and what they looked like was shown different here.  CJ was one the hackers who was described as a tall Thor look-a-like guy with glasses.  And Bridget was a short, curvy girl, with black hair and with yes, with glasses.  Even though Alex thought of her as stunning looking he also thought of her as HIS nerdy girl.  They do get their H.E.A. though.

Bridget did have some really good friends that also worked with her.  I liked that they all were a kind of misfits in one way or another.  Each with their own troubles that they were hiding. But to Bridget they were like second family to her.   Patty is one of those people who work for Bridget.  To say that she is colorful is putting it mildly.  And I liked her.  I see that she does get her own story in the next book called, " Royal Hacker."  Even though Patty intrigues me I'm not so sure I want to read the next one though because it also includes a  BSDM club in the story.  Just not sure how in depth that would be.
My last comment would be that ...one issue didn't really get dealt with.  So is it going to be dealt with in another book or is this just it?  So what happens to Bridget's dad feels like a cliffhanger to me.

**MY GOD FIGHTS FOR ME (feat Micah Tyler, Kaden Slay, Charity Gayle)

BOOK REVIEW- Once Upon a Cowboy: contemporary fairy tale romance (Cowboy Fairytales Book 1) by Lacy Williams

A princess on-the-run finds sanctuary with a Navy SEAL cowboy in this modern-day fairy tale retelling with a cowboy twist.

A princess on-the-run finds sanctuary where she least expects it...

After nearly dying in an assassination attempt, Princess Alessandra of Glorvaird escapes to a place no one would ever think to look for her: small town Oklahoma and a ranch staffed by a herd of wooly, uncouth cowboys. One cowboy in particular gets under her skin, until she sees his softer side. She knows this interlude can't last forever, but that doesn't stop her from wishing it might...

Former Navy SEAL Gideon Hale might've rescued the princess from freezing to death, but the soldier doesn't trust easily - or at all - especially when his gut tells him Alessandra is keeping secrets. But as Alessandra begins to fit into his life, he discovers another side to the princess - one that he can't help but like. When Alessandra's enemies close in, Gideon must fight to save the woman who has become so much more than a princess...

Once Upon a Cowboy is a contemporary western retelling of the Snow White fairytale and Book 1 in the Cowboy Fairytales series.  AMAZON 4 STARS

I liked the book, it packed in quite a bit for being a smaller book. Both of the main characters were well drawn and I liked them. Gideon might be a former Navy SEAL but his protective drive was still going strong. Even at times when he didn't really want to go there. Alessandra fell into that category and he was concerned about any danger she was in. He was concerned that it could endanger his loved ones, those that he was responsible for. That made sense. You got to see what he had been like before some things in life had stolen his joy. He was basically putting one foot in front of the other most of the time.
Alessandra was doing the same thing although her life was different, it had been pretty controlled with a lot of responsibilities too. Her life lacked the warmth of family though, something that Gideon did have.
There are some surprises in the story and an opening for more stories. I say openings because this story did not have what I consider a cliffhanger, many but not all things were concluded. The Epilogue does show a family secret. Something to build on in a future story.
So overall I would say that this is a sweet, clean story with just enough challenges to make it interesting.

BOOK REVIEW- Against the Wall (a Maverick Montana #1) by Rebecca Zanetti

Description
This book starts out with a startling opening scene.  Action right from the start.  I was almost as surprised as Sophie.
I also enjoyed this story even more than I hoped to.   Of course, Rebecca Zanetti is an author that I look for because I have enjoyed so many of her books.  I'm so happy that this one didn't disappoint me either.  I really liked it.  It was a fun, quick story with a good community of people in place as secondary people.  I wouldn't mind reading more especially about the other brothers.  Quinn seemed to have something heating up with another young woman new to the community.  Juliet is the name of that particular woman.  She has a art gallery that she is trying to establish.  Also the Lodge's sister Dawn has a unrequited love for Hawk that just might not be all that impossible.
The main characters, Jake and Sophie were great on their own and as they scrap together.  Even six year old,  Leila brings a smile to my face more than once.
Jake and Sophie definitely have some challenges to overcome.  Sophie is one independent woman because she has never really had all that many people who cared to look out for her.  When she meets Jake her reactions to him scare the daylights out of her.  Especially because he is almost like a force of nature.  One that she eventually does have more than one sexual encounter with.  The age old question comes up about is this just sex or is it more.

There is at least one group that is willing to commit violence to keep the golf course from coming about.  And it's not who you would normally expect.
I liked how the story ended and the Epilogue was pretty satisfying too.
