BOOK REVIEW- THE RELUCTANT DUCHESS by Roseanna M. White

Lady Rowena Kinnaird may be the heiress to a Highland earldom, but she has never felt good enough--not for her father, not for the man she thought she'd marry, not for God. But after a shocking attack, she's willing to be forever an outcast if it means escaping Loch Morar.
Brice Myerston, the Duke of Nottingham, has found himself in possession of a rare treasure his enemies are prepared to kill for. While Brice has never been one to shy away from manor-born ladies, the last thing he needs is the distraction of Lady Rowena, who finds herself in a desperate situation. But when Rowena's father tries to trap Brice into marrying his daughter, Brice makes a surprising decision.
Rowena wanted to escape the Highlands, but she's reluctant to marry a notorious flirt. And when she learns that Brice is mixed up in questionable business with a stolen treasure, she fears she's about to end up directly in the path of everything she was trying to avoid.   AMAZON

This was a slow starting book and at first I found it hard to get drawn into.  The emotions and trials that Rowena was going through were easier to understand as the story went on.  She was suffering and in danger from several different directions.   The only two things that were really giving her joy or comfort was her maid Lilias (also a distant Kinnaird cousin) and her sister Annie.  Lilias has been her maid and the one who has loved her deeply and helped raised her.  Lilias loves her like the daughter she never had.    Annie may be only eight years old but her love towards Rowena is pure and deep.  Rowena was a noblewoman and an heiress but she sure was treated like a peasant under her father's cruel grip.  And Malcolm was someone who wanted her for all the wrong reasons but also because he saw what he wanted and he just intended to take it/her.  He was clever and cruel as well.  He's one of the things that Rowena was running from.
Brice was such a likable charmer, someone that Rowena wasn't sure she should trust.   I liked him and the fact that he leaned on the leadings of God.  There were many times that  even when his closest friends and family wondered what in the world he was doing.
There was several different plots working in the story but it was well done and easy to follow.

I thought that the cover picture of the book was attractive.
And the Character List at the beginning of the book was helpful too!  What an interesting group of people they turned out to be.

I received a copy of this book via Bethany House in exchange for an honest review.
