Free Crochet Pattern for a Cross-Over Long DC Twisted Cowl

Cross-Over Long DC Cowl

Cross-Over Long DC Cowl

This is another pattern using the long double crochet stitch. It's a twisted cowl. And if you are interested, here is the pattern for the matching crochet hat. Other patterns in this set are a pair of fingerless gloves and a cellphone holder. The purse and pouch will be posted soon. Hope you will enjoy the set like I am.
I provided an image tutorial for those who have never crocheted a twisted cowl. It is very easy, but it can be a bit confusing when it comes to making the twist in the chains. You want to make sure that you only make a half twist, and that the twist remains. In addition, the stitch pattern doesn't help to make it easy easier either. So I figured some images might help. Once you get past the first few rounds, you can sit back and enjoy the pattern.
The instructions are given for a small cowl. However, if you would like a longer cowl to wrap around two or more times, you can easily increase the length in multiples of 4.
Skill Level: Easy/Intermediate.
Materials
Yarn: Patons Canadiana The New Generation (One 100g/3.5oz. ball), or any other worsted weight yarn that you have on hand. You will need more for a larger cowl.
Hook Size: 4.50mm, or any hook suitable for the yarn.
Gauge: Measures 2" across 8 sts and over 4 hdc rows.
Finished Size: When laying flat it measures 9" across and 7.5" high, though you can make it any size you like.

Working the Cross-Over Long Double Crochet:
For this pattern the cross-over long double crochet is worked into the last stitch made in previous round, or into the skipped stitch of current round. To make the stitch, yarn over and insert the hook from front to back into designated stitch. Yarn over at the back and pull through. You should have three loops on your hook. Yarn over and pull through first two loops. Yarn over and pull through last two loops.  Cross-Over Long DC
Notes:
The cowl is worked in a continuous rnd. Once the round is established, it allows for mindless crocheting until you have reached a desired size.
The first cross-over long dc in rnd 4 is made in the same st as the last hdc of the previous rnd. This off-sets the sts in order to create a somewhat spiral effect.
When counting your rnds, lay the cowl flat and count all rnds on both sides of the center rnd. You should have equal amounts of rnds on each side of the center rnd when finished.
