Description

How could life possibly get worse?

This is a nightmare I’ll never escape, a bad dream from which I’ll never wake. The scar under my fingers throbs with pain as the sound coming from my phone yanks me back in time to that awful day—the fights with my parents, the disappointment of being told what I couldn’t do, the meanness I felt, the trip down from the pass that ended almost as soon as it began when the snow on the mountain gave way and roared down the steep slope, engulfing our SUV and rolling it over and over… Waking in a hospital later to the physical pain of being broken in a dozen places, and the emotional pain of losing my parents, feeling wracked with guilt because it was my fault.

I relive it all in the space of an instant as the audio message “from Dad” plays. When the sounds emanating from the phone stop, I’m filled with growing dread, a different kind of horror. The voices in the sound clip are familiar, those of the men who are supposed to be protecting me, guarding me from forces we don’t yet understand, but which might reach some of the highest pinnacles of the U.S. government. And that’s just too crazy to comprehend, an idea that we shouldn’t even speak out loud if we don’t want to get locked up in a funny farm, or worse, “disappeared” as if we never existed.

It's been eighteen months since that horrible day, the day I lost both my parents and my sight…

  • My Review:  Titled:  Angst, Danger,  Terrorists and evil runs deep
  •  I jumped into this story having not read any of the other books.  The emotion starts right away just like the info in the description highlights.
  •  Tess Bartlett, was a tough minded young woman with grit and a few people really on her side. Showing up often is Derek and Oliver. Derek wants Tess and is jealous of Oliver. I really liked Oliver and his quieter, smart ways. He is older that Tess and was hired to assist her like a teacher, aiding her in her transition back to High School.
  •  Tom is her trusted pilot, who is in the story in a limited way but she trusts him. A lot more than she trusts her gruff, giving orders Uncle Travis. He is now her over-protective guardian that she barely knows. He now runs her father's $700 billion tech company, MonoHard. Travis was a career soldier, that Tess barely knows and he really doesn't know her or understand her at all ! Watch out Travis. Resentment from Tess, incoming !!!
  • Luis, is sent with Tess on her travels to protect her but she's not sure how far she can trust him. He sure is super loyal to Travis. And Travis is really in tight with General Turnbull and that makes Tess more suspicious,  Travis has a girlfriend, Robyn who Tess used to like but now she's not sure of her either !People are trying to kill her and Travis and others are keeping her out of the loop.  Grr..
  • Ainsley is the AI program that has been developed by James (Tess's dead father) with the assistance of Derek, the smart, nerdy,  bad boy with a smart mouth.  He's also an extremely skilled hacker !!

There is a lot of High School drama and danger with Oliver helping her all the way ! There's some romance in the air between the two of them, which I liked.  Although, I didn't care for all the tech stuff in the story, it was well written, creative and well described !!  It does end in a cliff-hanger which isn't my favorite way to end a story.

I do want to thank the author and Netglley for the story because for the most part I really did enjoy it.
