The pies are sweet, but secrets in the small town of East Black Oak can be fatal.
Just before the Fall Festival, reigning pie champion Martha Simms’ body is discovered by Candice’s German Shepherd Chowder— whispers swirl of stolen recipes, poisoned pastries, and a rivalry rooted in decades-old land disputes.
Prominent people have been profiting off the Simms family legacy for years—and Martha may have died trying to expose them.
As fires are set, threats delivered, and poison slips into the contest, can Candice stop a killer before the town’s festival ends in another death?
Balancing her amateur sleuth friends and reporter Christopher Donovan with the local police chief and the mayor, Candice uncovers a chilling truth.
The killer confronts her in her closed bookshop, The Crime Scene, with only Chowder and her cat, Whiskers, to protect her.
Police Chief Sterling and his staff are busy with the festival as tension and fear mount.
---------------MY 4 star REVIEW NOTES TITLED: "Who is D?''
Who is D and where are Martha Simms recipes, files and cookbooks? Is a Barclay family member involved? Maybe Oliver?
Tara York, is Candice's relatively new assistant at "The Crime Scene" bookstore. Gracie Beckett is Candice's neighbor who is a computer wiz and assistant East Back Oak librarian and amateur sleuth. Betsy Beckett is Gracie's quirky grandmother and their nosy next-door neighbor.
Whiskers, is the new bookshop mascot cat. Candice has her loyal German Shepard, Chowder who I have encountered in a previous book and look forward to more of him. She had adopted him when he failed at the police academy where she had worked years ago. She is a retired detective now a bookstore owner. Chowder is better known for sniffing out food rather than drugs but don't count out his abilities.
Chief James Sterling, patrols the area as his team keeps an eye on things. With the Chief wanting it all kept quiet until they can get more proof.
His daughter Lucy , his wife and her step-mother Rebecca get pulled into his investigation too. Diane Warren knew things and kept silent. Mayor Ned Noodleman, what a name ! Is he corrupt? Will he try to do a coverup?
Christopher is looking forward to taking pictures at the Fall Festival and always has a camera around his neck. I hope that he's going to need to be more helpful than just with his camera. So many secrets !!! And some suspects start showing up ! A good mystery with an Epilogue and ending with a sweet kiss between Christopher and Candice.
