An Amazon Charts, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, and USA Today bestseller.
From the author of The Art of Inheriting Secrets comes an emotional new tale of two sisters, an ocean of lies, and a search for the truth.
Her sister has been dead for fifteen years when she sees her on the TV news…
Josie Bianci was killed years ago on a train during a terrorist attack. Gone forever. It’s what her sister, Kit, an ER doctor in Santa Cruz, has always believed. Yet all it takes is a few heart-wrenching seconds to upend Kit’s world. Live coverage of a club fire in Auckland has captured the image of a woman stumbling through the smoke and debris. Her resemblance to Josie is unbelievable. And unmistakable. With it comes a flood of emotions—grief, loss, and anger—that Kit finally has a chance to put to rest: by finding the sister who’s been living a lie.
After arriving in New Zealand, Kit begins her journey with the memories of the past: of days spent on the beach with Josie. Of a lost teenage boy who’d become part of their family. And of a trauma that has haunted Kit and Josie their entire lives.
Now, if two sisters are to reunite, it can only be by unearthing long-buried secrets and facing a devastating truth that has kept them apart far too long. To regain their relationship, they may have to lose everything.
MY REVIEW OF 5 STARS Titled: What a strange family. Made me cry & laugh
Kit Bianci starts out the story with her point of view and her emotions. Kit's a ER doctor now but she's always been interested in science even as a young girl. She always loved the ocean and surfing too. This is something that she also got good at as a young child and she never gave it up ! She's actually skilled in a lot of different areas everything but staying in a relationship with a man for very long. She doesn't trust love and she has plenty of reasons to feel that way. She grew up in a really strange way, practically being raised by Josie and a young teenager, Dylan, who at first I thought was her brother. Oh, boy talk, about him having issues. But once he steps into the family he protects those girls like they are his little sister. He makes sure the eat, sleep in their beds, braids their hair and makes sure that they get to school. He's also the one who teaches the girls to surf. He's patient, troubled but still there for them ! The parents are so neglectful of the girls, that it's criminal. Their Italian father, is bigger than life, obsessive about his wife and scary at times. They own a house near a cliff and he also owns the restaurant and is the well known chef there. The girls learned a lot working in the restaurant and Dylan also worked there as well as a sous chef. Then the things for the family go downhill after an earthquake.
We get to see Josie's side of things and it's so sad the unknowns things that she has gone through. Fifteen years later, she's now Mari. Those two sisters have led such different lives after Josie just left, letting people think that she's dead. Kit has somewhat forgiven her mother, keeping in contact with her almost daily. She even had to mom keep her shy, feral cat Hobo, while she's gone. One of my favorite things in the story is when it is said that the Bianci women loved the ocean and the Bianci couldn't sleep without the sound of the ocean. A fact that is mentioned and proved a few times in the story, which I liked.
Kit bumps into a Spaniard named Javier, who begins to peruse her and she's definitely cold to him at first. But he's not about to give up on her although she does everything that she can think to dissuade him even after their first one-night stand. She always meant to leave. I loved when he used the phrase "Alma Gemela" which means Soul Twins. He used it first when he explained the painful connection of sisters, between Kit and Josie/Mari. He was so good to Kit. I really liked him a lot and he was tender and romantic as he tries to woo Kit. The romance was really good amidst all the pain, tears and reunions. I would read it again !
By the way, what a great title for this book and it makes total sense as I read the book !
I read this book by borrowing it through my Free Prime Library and enjoyed it a lot !
