BOOK REVIEW- Hero Unbound (Heroes of Oak Creek) by Janie Crouch

 Book Cover

Eva Dempsey is out of options.

She’s made it to Oak Creek, Wyoming with two traumatized dogs, twenty dollars, and a fear of damned near everything.

Things that didn’t make it with her? Her self-esteem, confidence, or any way of supporting herself.

Theo Lindstrom knows how to survive. He proved it as a child when he had to keep himself and sister alive in the wilderness. Now he runs Linear Tactical, the company his adoptive father helped create, and teaches survival skills to others.

So he recognizes the desperation in the eyes of the petite beauty who’s pulled into town, and knows there’s more to her story than she’s letting on.

He normally keeps to himself—for very good reasons—but he can’t this time. Something about Eva draws him in a way he can’t resist, even knowing she’s got secrets. The deadly kind.

When the danger she's running from shows up, Theo’s not going to let her fight it alone.

This is his town.
This is his woman.

And he’ll protect both to his last breath.

This story was way beyond anything that I was expecting.  I'm trying to be careful in what I say though because I don't want to spoil the telling of the story.  Maybe it's enough to say that the danger that she's running from is clever as well as cruel with many dangerous resources.

Eva has been running for some time but nothing seems to help much.  Her two dogs are they only thing that she can cling to and they are also her comfort too.  That relationship was so tender to watch as was her ability to bond with the animals around her. Some of her memories may be fuzzy but she slowly beings to trust Theo as a tenuous friendship develops. Friendship that also leads to some pretty hot sexual encounters.  There's even some mysteries in that area as well though.

Theo is a loner but that doesn't mean he has no friends.  He has a super supportive family, and skilled friends as well.  And the way he interacts with Eva, was SO good.  He might not know right away what is going on with her but he takes the time to try  to figure it out.   Even though the mystery of Eva often has him shaking his head.  I was a bit confused myself right along side of him.

The story is INTENSE with plenty of emotion, as the story continues but so is the ending.  The Epilogue brings everything to a good conclusion.
