Drew and Madeline Farthering arrive at a Regency-era house party at Winteroak House, excited to be reunited with old friends, including Drew's former Oxford classmate Talbot Cummins. Tal is there with his fiancée, Alice Henley, and though many present seem worried about the couple, nobody is prepared when Alice dies from an apparent overdose. Tal refuses to believe she'd taken the drugs intentionally, and a dark question arises of whether the death is an accident or murder.
The police have their own information though, and Drew is shocked when they arrest someone he's trusted and admired since his childhood--someone who's been smuggling drugs into the country for years. This book took me a while to get into. A slow starting story but with two interesting people. Drew and Madeline, are practically still newlyweds and their love shows. So does their kind but slightly quirky personalities. I enjoyed their humorous teasing back and forth. I wasn't all that excited about the Regency era house party, but it did make for an unusual setting. I guess I didn't realize it was a week long party where they had to stay in the role of that era. Clothing, dancing, games even down to their nightclothes. As the story went on, that part wasn't really a problem or off putting. It was no longer the main part of the story. It became a backdrop and other parts of the story took over.
I can see where the questions started coming up about Tal's fiancee Alice. Then...the long awaited dance comes to a dramatic and sudden halt. And right after that a swift and shocking arrest. But the action and the mysteries just keep right on coming. It just kept you guessing. It even causes Drew to question why in the world God would make his being a sleuth, his calling. He wasn't feeling very good about it, wondering how in the world he could keep poking his nose into things. It just felt like on this case , he was failing all over the place. It really shook his confidence. Madeline continued to encourage him and reminding him to keep his promise to Tal. He promised to find out the who and why of Alice's death. This story not only had a lot of twists and turns but plenty of interesting people as well. Nick and Sarah and their blossoming romance were just a few.
Questions will be answered but the price will be high.
