I really liked this book. I liked both Brea and Jax. It was incredible how clueless Jax was about what life was like for anyone with the label of Second. In the beginning he couldn't understand her resentment towards him as a Gatekeeper. This marriage was supposed to be an honor for her. He wasn't horrible to begin with but Brea sure got tossed into things way beyond her understanding. She had been raised to SERVE the Gatekeepers but had almost zero information about what that entailed. Jax does redeem himself as time goes on. But his family was less than helpful especially his father. He was a bully who I wanted to slap right in the head. It was cool to see Brea stand up to him. I would definitely sign him up for anger management if it was offered there.
His brother Declan needed some help in the attitude department as well. Not as bad as his father but he was leaning that way more than once. His sister, Gabrielle as a mixed bag. At times I liked her when she was kinder to Brea but she could also be incredibly insensitive at times too.
This story had plenty of surprises and twists in it with really good science fiction and world building. There was so much more truth that has been withheld from ALL of the citizens of this world.
I wasn't totally happy with the ending of this book but it does have a H.E.A. for now. But you can also see the trouble that will be coming if the story continues, which I bet it will.
On a side note, I really liked the cover for this eBook. It really caught my eye.
