BOOK REVIEW: DUKE OF MIDNIGHT

13064395
Twenty years ago Maximus Batten witnessed the brutal murders of his parents. Now the autocratic Duke of Wakefield, he spends his days ruling Parliament. But by night, disguised as the Ghost of St. Giles, he prowls the grim alleys of St. Giles, ever on the hunt for the murderer. One night he finds a fiery woman who meets him toe-to-toe-and won't back down.

I found the storylines interesting and the characters kept my interest.  The reason I say storylines with an "s" was because there were several.  The agony of Maximus the Duke was well written, as was his long search for the person who murdered his parents; and he failed time after time.   His cold appearing demeanor held a lot of heat, and guilt.  I also really liked the other main character, Artemis.  She had to do her best to be in the background because of her situation in life.  As a mere companion to her cousin, she had to live on the outside  of life, hiding the spuky, intelligent, vibrant, courageous person that she really was. Well most of the time that is; there are times that the "real" Artemis gets to come out and play.  Both MC's have secrets but of course as the story unfolds, they all come tumbling out.  Secondary characters were good ones too.

One of my favorite things?  The author soooo... got me going when it came to the identity of the villian (the murderer)  At one point I thought, "I know who it is". Then I thought "Oh no, it can't be _____."  Then it turned to "Well, maybe. It would make sense."   Well no, it wasn't the person but the author did a really good job of keeping you guessing until you really do find out who it is.  Nicely done; I enjoyed that.

I was a bit concerned that this book might be too spicy/sex filled, but it wasn't.  Oh, don't get me wrong there were a couple of those scenes but without some of the over the top details that quite a few books do. It relied more on the story being told.
