Book Review: The Point

The Point: The Redemption of Oban Ironbout

This story is set on the Isle of Estillyen—a distant harbor known for bringing ancient words of worth to the present.  "Words Matter"; is a main phrase of the story as well. It all seems to start with Hollie and Goodwin Macbreeze traveling to this island for peace and artistic inspiration. There is also the fact that  Goodwin is  drawn to the cottage on The Point, which has been important to him from childhood.  It draws him and he has many questions about it as well.  There are several stories going on all at once along with the monks giving readings or a dialogue between light and dark, good and evil, making the Bible more actively alive to modern people.

I really wanted to like this book and I know that others will rave about it as being immensely enjoyable.   And I am glad that it will find an audience.  I'm sorry to say that I wasn't one of them.  I did find some parts that were interesting; some of the interactions of the people and the twists at the end.  During the Readings you are shown both sides of the struggle between good  evil; God and satan.  Truth be told though, I struggled to get through this book; I guess its just not my style.

Song Words:JUST THE WAY YOU ARE

Don't go changing to try and please me
You never let me down before
Don't imagine you're too familiar
And I don't see you anymore

I wouldn't leave you in times of trouble
We never could have come this far
I took the good times; I'll take the bad times
I'll take you just the way you are

Don't go trying some new fashion
Don't change the color of your hair
You always have my unspoken passion
Although I might not seem to care

I don't want clever conversation
I never want to work that hard
I just want someone that I can talk to
I want you just the way you are

I need to know that you will always be
The same old someone that I knew
What will it take till you believe in me
The way that I believe in you?

I said I love you and that's forever
And this I promise from the heart
I could not love you any better
I love you just the way you are

Book Review: Jesus Killed My Church

This is the story of Randy Bohlender, and his wife Kelsey; they took the "normal" route to begin with when they entered into ministry.  They soon found that they didn't fit that mold and yearned for something more of God.  The only problem was that they weren't even sure what that was or what it looked like. They just felt strongly that for them it wasn't going to be the usual church business as usual. Their journey soon became a process of elimination and exposure to ministries who were already experiencing more of what God was doing.

What did I take away from reading this book?  Here are some points that the author made that really stood out to me:
1. I do find it weird that the church strives to convenience
people when people really thrive on challenge.
2. I find it weird that so many believers are satisfied with
their present reality.
Unbelievers generally have a better grip on the idea of pilgrimage
than believers do. They understand that change is usually
found over the horizon, and one needs to go somewhere to find it.

The last statement I have seen working in several different situations  recently:

3, God’s purposes really do work toward good.

I would add that OFTEN the answer that God brings doesn't look anything like we thought it would; but He does do what He promised; He brings good out of bad.  Nothing is ever wasted.

Bird Nest Knitting Pattern
Courtesy of Barbara Johnson, friend of Native Songbird Care and Conservation.
Instructions:
Using 2 strands of yarn, cast on 54 stitches, then divide evenly among 4 dpns.
Work in stockinette (all K stitches) until the nest is approximately 3” tall.
Purl one row, then start to decrease:
Row 1) K7, K2tog - repeat to end
Row 2) K6, K2tog - repeat to end
Row 3) K5, K2tog - repeat to end
Row 4) K4, K2tog - repeat to end
Row 5) K3, K2tog - repeat to end
Row 6) K2, K2tog - repeat to end
Row 7) K1, K2tog - repeat to end
See tip #4 below to determine if you want to continue in this pattern for one more row. Cut yarns, leaving a 6” tail. Slide yarn on needle, draw tight to close up end (put a few stitches across the gap if need be.) Weave in yarn and cut off.
Tips and Notes:
1. To make sure the nest is tight and washable, use two strands of washable yarn (using two different colors to make counting stitches easier).
2. Use three strands if the yarn is very fine.Use double pointed needs - just about any size from 5 through 9, depending on the weight of the yarn. (You can use circular needles if you prefer.)
3. When doing K2tog, it seems to be easier to knit through the back loops rather than the front. If you’re still having problems with K2tog, try using a crochet hook to pull the yarn through.
4. Only decrease to the point where you have a small, easily closed gap in the bottom of the nest; otherwise there can be a bump on the bottom that can make the nest unstable.
5. Directions given are for nests that are about 4” across. Cast on fewer stitches for smaller nests. They knit up so quickly, it’s easy to experiment. (If the nest is much smaller, start the decrease with K6, K2tog.)
6. The yarn should not be fuzzy, so toes don’t get caught.

Book Review: Soul Defenders: The Black Orchids

The Battleground?  Cherry Creek;  a quiet small town.  What on earth could be happening there?
Only demons,  a murdered pastor, kidnappings, torture, demonic harassment, and an international  old evil; The Black Orchid organization, .  There's a plan to unleash evil on a level never before experienced anywhere and to cause it to spread worldwide; and Cherry Creek is their base.  Not to worry there are angels dispatched to protect  believers and intervene as they pray and as God directs.  Ted Lyons comes to town as the new pastor of Cherry Creek Community Church, and then things really begin to heat up.

I really, really liked this eBook;  its subtitle says that its a novel of spiritual warfare and that's exactly what it is.  An inside look of  what that kind of warfare could look like.  It totally kept my interest; so much so it was hard to put down.  So I didn't; not until I finished it.  All the characters in the story were well written and there were twists and turns in the story which I have always liked.  This is the first book that I have read by this author but hopefully there will be more of this caliber.   I will be keeping an eye out for them.

Our Goal is to Love with........

"Our goal is to love with the perfect love of God and bring the goodness of God into peoples' lives. It doesn't matter whether they deserve it or not; that is irrelevant. The issue is are you going to bestow it? Are YOU going to do something and say something that is good?"

Book Review: The Future of Worship, eBook

The Future of Worship: Preparing the Church for a Tsunami of Change

Worship is in the midst of change and its going to hit like a Tsunami.  The way we worship in church is being examined and found wanting.  Why?  It has been more concerned with things that have little to do with God and His presence and more with empty performance.
The pattern of the original design of worship from the Bible is examined along with Nathan Byrd's experiences with Holy Spirit as he goes through this process of learning; how God first set it up.  There were 4 words that began his journey;  Tabernacle,Temple,Synagogue, and Sanctuary.  The whole purpose of the book is to go to the Higher Ground of worshiping God; and giving God what he wants.

As the author explains: " Having spent the past forty years walking in salvation, there have been many days that I've felt cheated by the experiences of the past that did not yield a more tangible experience with the Presence. Most of my church experiences have been superficial in that they were mostly acquainted with a “feeling” or an attempt to get something from God by my praise and worship, rather than the simple joy of being in His presence for fellowship and His pleasure. My experiences were also diminished because there was never a tangible place or symbol of His presence, just people and pulpits or stages that were the centerpiece of my attention during worship."  I found that statement alone to be a pretty accurate experience that many of us have gone through as we searched for the "more" of God.  There is hope as people read and hopefully experience all that God has for them in the area of true worship.
