“ Surprised By Laughter” - “The Comic World of C.S. Lewis” - .
by Terry Lindvall, PH. D.
This is a book written about C.S. Lewis as the title tells you; it shows the many people and experiences that shaped and influenced his humor. Its a dissection bit by bit of the many types of things that cause us to laugh and to find humor in day to day living. It shows how C.S. Lewis and his friends then took some of that humor into their writings. Also, as expected there is a highlighting of his different works where that humor is expressed.
I had high hopes that this book would be more humor than just talking about humor. Alas, I was to be disappointed! Once again the Huge size of a book proved to be a warning sign of dry reading ahead. The Acknowledgments page alone almost made me cry...not from compassion or because of moving words but from an sense of something being overworked.. Who would I recommend this book to? A serious student who needs this to complete a project. The facts are there; the author has done his homework . I hate to be so brutal to an author; because I recognize this took time and a lot of work; even a pouring out from the heart but constant pushing was required to read this book. The best part was the cover picture, which promised much but failed to deliver.
