Juliet
Who’s the inked monster stalking me through the rain?
Of course.
It’s the boy who once broke my heart… now grown into a dangerous mafia enforcer.
I’ve been running from my family for months.
From the marriage they tried to force on me.
From the men hunting me down tonight.
But Nico Romano gets to me first.
Strong hands. Cold voice.
And a gun I’m suddenly very aware of.
He says he’s here to save me.
He says the men hunting me want me dead.
Yet he throws me over his shoulder and locks me inside a crumbling coastal mansion like I’m his hostage.
The worst part?
The way he looks at me doesn’t feel like hate anymore.
It feels like possession.
It feels like danger wrapped in heat.
And this time…
I don’t know if I want to run from my enemy.
Or straight into his arms.
Nico
Who’s the stubborn little hellcat sprinting straight into an ambush?
Of course.
Juliet Russo… the girl I should’ve stayed far away from, now all grown up and just as dangerous to me as the men chasing her.
She’s been running for months.
From her father.
From a marriage that would’ve destroyed her.
From the families who want her dead.
I get to her first.
One grab and she’s fighting me like I’m the devil himself.
Maybe I am.
But I’m the only monster willing to bleed for her.
So I drag her out of the crossfire and into a coastal mansion where no one can touch her.
Not even me… though my restraint is hanging by a thread.
She thinks I’m her captor.
She thinks she hates me.
But Juliet has no idea how far I’ll go to keep her alive.
Or how long I’ve wanted the girl who runs.
--MY 5 STAR REVIEW- TITLED: They have to stand back to back to win
We start out with Juliet Russo's point of view; her side of the story. Nico is helping her escape? Or is he? She wonders why he would help a woman that he sold out ? Or did he? She was promised to Riccardo Leone and he wasn't giving up ! I gotta admit that the beginning caught me off guard ! Her father, Don Russo is a monster who basically sold her to Riccardo and he's a monster too !
The Nico Romano gets his say. He sees all the bruises and scratches and the red mark on her check. And he asks her "Who did this to you?" She wants to know why does he care now? They are being chased and there is a gun in the glove compartment and Juliet knows how to use it ! They run from safe-house to safe-house but no place is really safe for long ! And the titles of some of these chapters, Wow ! Like "Cellar of Scars". Pretty indicative of some of the violence going on ! Marco is on his side and helps where he can.
Lucia Russo (her sister) is helping her as much as she can. Juliet feels that she just might be someone that she can trust. She's hoping that's true. Lucia was the one that warned her to run ! Because people want BOTH Juliet and Nico dead and continue to send threats and near misses. The intensity of the attacks and the cleverness of the evil ones pursuing them was also intense. As was the romance that develops between Juliet and Nico.
I found that there was an interesting approach to the way this story was written and the ending was a bit odd but interesting too.
