Mixed feelings on this one. I liked both Gates and Sloane and I think the author did a pretty good job when it came to letting you into not only their history together but the pain of their indiviual growing up years. Their was plenty enough pain to go around for both. Gates grew up as an unwanted child until his father finally found a use for him; his father Victor was a mean, selfish man. They once were so in love but Gates' father hated Sloane and everrything she stood for and made sure she knew it as he made one roadbloack after another. One of the main ways he did that was to keep Gates so busy at his multi-millionaire business that Gates had less and less time for Sloane. Of course that wasn't enough for the old man to do, so he keep tormenting Sloane with talking about things that would ratched up her insecurites about their relationship. The final straw had Sloane packing up and leaving before knowing she was pregnant. The few times she had tried to tell him, she met with hateful glares from him or they were interupted. So she quit trying to tell him thinking he was becoming way to much like his hateful father. After all she had to protect her son, Brayden from that at all costs. So that's when they were brought together on a business issue, she lied, made up stories and did some pretty immature things. But then so did Gates, because he was angry and not as over Sloane as he claimed. Most of the story after that is about the struggle that they go through wondering how or if they can salvage anything between themselves. While I was reading I just kept wondering when "the secret" was coming out and how it would hapen. I knew it had to happen the worst possibe way but I guessed wrong on how that would be. Look for a storm shelter when he finds out. There is a twist in what he believes about it but he is BEYOND angry. There is plenty of guilt and remorse on both of their counts. Even in the midst of their confusion there will be sex though.
The story had charming group of supporters that surrounded Sloane, including her Aunt Avery. It was cute to read the closest that Brayden could say her name was "Abee" that sounds about right. Even Gates had a few charming supporters too. The wisest seemed to be Evan; a down to earth childhood friend.
I received an ARC of this book via NetGalley, in exchange for an honest review.
