Introduction
I have thoroughly enjoyed writing “I Played My Best for Him!”
The inspiration came when I read the story behind “O Holy
Night” at an event in December 2023. I thought it was fascinat-
ing and started looking into the stories behind other Christmas
carols. Having just recorded Peju Sings! The Little Drummer Boy
and Other Christmas Favorites, I was motivated to learn about the
stories behind all thirteen songs on the album and compile them
in a book! As with most other things, it ended up being a lot
more work than I initially anticipated. Some details that have
become “embedded” in a few of the stories are not verifiable (or
have been debunked), so separating fact from fiction was a bit of a
challenge. Some of the “facts” reported by sources that were
conidered reliable were contradicted by other sources. Regardless,
the stories are full of intriguing details about people who have
blessed us with the gift of Christmas music. In some cases, where
there has been enough reason to doubt often-repeated aspects
of the stories, I have included a brief discussion addressing the
details that are in question. I have attempted, to the best of my
ability, to present accurate versions of the story.
MY REVIEW OF THIS BOOK:
It has a living legacy and the song has been SUNG and PERFORMED by MANY FAMOUS PERFORMERS !!! I've ALWAYS loved this song, sung at Christmas Time.
It's nice to be able to add a bit of History to it origins with this EXCEPT:
Katherine Kennicott Davis died in 1980 at 87 and left all her
royalties and proceeds to the music program at Wellesley College.
Her legacy lives on through the music she created and no doubt,
through the impact of her generosity. The words “I played my
best for Him” in “The Little Drummer Boy,” spoken by a little
boy who had no money, serve to remind us that sometimes the
greatest gifts are things that money can’t buy. He had a drum,
and he played his best for the new-born King. We, too, can use
our gifts, resources and talents to make a difference in the world.
And I think that sums up both the song and this story. It earned from me a
5 Star Rating !
